It happens only in India

My country is famed for many good things. People here are amazing. There are certain things happening here in India that actually makes me wonder of my country is the only where such bizzarre things happen.

It was just days before that I posted about an 'in love' couple who were caught as thieves but were lucky enough to officiate their union with the blessings of their elders. I had said it then that not are lucky enough to happen that in their life. Now there is another story that is making us wonder if anything can happen in India.

We all know that marriage is a complex decision. Specially in India, it is not just the union of two individuals, but of two families. Youth of the country have been dealing with the age old arrange marriage system that gives them little time to understand each other before tying the marital knot and then suddenly you get to know about something called 'pakadua vivah' which literally translates to kidnapped wedding. If you are wondering if the bride gets kidnapped by groom to get wedded to her, then sorry, you are wrong, it is the other way round.

This system was quite popular in certain states of northern India until the government tightened it's grip to help eligible bachelors. Educated young men are kidnapped and forced to marry at gun points. Does this type of marriage work? Well, the guy is constantly threatened until he gives up and accepts hid forced bride to be his legally wedded wife.

Recently, Durgesh Saran, an engineer with the railways in Bihar, alleged that he was kidnapped by 11 masked men and was forcefully married off to, 23 year old Priyanka Kumari who reportedly is an high school drop out. Priyanka's family accepts the allegations and explains that Durgesh and Priyanka have known each other for a little over a year and their marriage was finalised, but Durgesh's demands for dowry kept pushing the wedding for further dates. They say, they would never be able to arrange for what Durgesh demanded as dowry and that made them take this step.

Durgesh is however not ready to accept Priyanka as his wife and wants justice. I wonder if this marriage will actually work. It makes me think if previous Pakadaua vivah' actually worked.
