Queen Victoria !

We ll are very much familiar with the above mentioned name. She was the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. In the of 1876, she adopted the additional title of Empress of India.

Well when India was under colonial rule, Queen Victoria passed away and the then Viceroy Lord Curzon proposed the construction of a grand building with a museum and gardens and eventually this structure came up as an result -

The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819–1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture.

The building has the dimensions of 103m by 69m and is raised towards the sky for 56m. It was constructed with White Makhrana Marble which was also used in the construction of the iconic Taj Mahal.

The architect of the beauty was Sir William Emerson who was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) from 1899 to 1902

Today the Victoria Memorial has as many as 25 galleries displaying a ton of things starting from information about Queen Victoria, sculptures, British culture and a lot more. Victoria Memorial receives a footfall in thousands everyday.
