Today, whenever people ask me if I would ever go back to India, the answer is always an enthusiastic yes. However, there’s something about the year 2000 - that moment in time 20 years ago - that really dances in my head as the ideal Indian experience.
It was during this celebrated period of modern Indian development that I had the fortune of visiting Goa on the western coast. By far, it was the most exhilarating part of my journey. And I must admit, it was what brought me back to India two decades later.
Goa first caught my eye with its palm-fringed beaches, inviting sea breeze and exotic sunsets. The strip of sand along Anjuna beach was a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, full of markets selling traditional trinkets, street food stalls and hip bars. During the day, I encountered many young and old playing badminton or strolling along the shoreline. At night, parties raged on until sunrise.
Another captivating sight was the promenade at nearby Baga Beach. A small river flowing into the Arabian Sea slowly made its way past fishing boats, dilapidated rickshaws, ancient churches and charming cafes. The multi-colored sky both in the morning and late afternoon further added to the picturesque character of the site.
I also had the chance to discover some hidden gems; from the Portuguese influenced churches to the many waterfalls scattered throughout the region. Each one dared me to stop and take in their breathtaking beauty.
But to me, the most fascinating aspect of Goa was in the ocean. Whether it be taking part in watersports like surfing, snorkeling, parasailing or simply lazing around the beach in an open air hammock, the vibrancy of the sea life around the coastline was absolutely mesmerizing.
The many Hindu temples near the shore cast numerous reflections onto the stillness of the waters - truly a sight to behold!
All in all, I felt so utterly embraced by Goa at each step of my journey, desperate to stay longer and explore more. Its chilled vibe and relaxed atmosphere put me so quickly at ease, that I found myself forgetting the world around.
Even now, after twenty years, Goa remains unrivaled in my memory. The vivid sights, sounds and sensations of the state created such an incredibly memorable experience - deeply ingrained into the heart of every passerby.
If you ever get the chance to go back in time, please do not hesitate in exploring this paradisiacal place. I can guarantee you will want nothing else but to stay forever!
