Everyone takes his name with respect calling "Chhatrapati" means one which gives Chatra to people (Praja), it was a royal title used during Maratha empire. For his greatness, this article is not enough, so let's look upon brief history.

Shivaji Maharaj was born at Shivneri fort, Pune district in Maharashtra. Shivaji Maharaj was not born as king, his father was army commander in the court of Adil Shah. "Aadil Shahi Kingdom" was one of the powerful kingdom in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra.

In childhood Shivaji listened stories from his mother was "Jijabai" who tells stories of Ramayana, Mahabharata, kingdom of Vijaynagara. The biography of Krishnadevaraya who was a powerful king of Hindu empire greatly inspired Shivaji Maharaj. It is believed that Shivray also read books on Administration of Vijaynagara. It was the only empire that fought against Deccan Sultanate.

At 16 years he took a pledge to establish self-governance or self-rule which is called "Swarajya" in Marathi. He had leadership skills and his nature was loving, his friends always assumed as their leader. He fought against his powerful Mughal king Aurangzeb with local peasants called Mavale.

They are locals of Sahyadri hills. He made a small army of peasants at Sahyadri. At start, his army was small but regulated and self-disciplined. He sacrificed his life to fight for the motive of the self-rule. Therefore, he was one of the valiant freedom fighters of India.

Shivaji Maharaj always took suggestions from his mother Jijabai. With his army he won his first fort "Torna" at the age of 16 years, "Raigad" and "Pratapgad" forts at age of 17 years. After that he was just unstoppable, in “Treaty of Purandar” he shows his political presence of mind.

He used his skills in battle known as "Enemy's Tactics" called "Ganimi Kana" in Marathi. His friends, colleagues were so dedicated to him that they are ready to sacrifice their own life for him. Many of his friends and colleagues like "Tanaji Malusare", Baji Prabhu Deshpande, Murarbaji Prabhu, etc sacrifices their life to build "Swarajya" (Self-Governance). Without them it was not possible to establish such great Maratha Empire.

Raigad fort was the Rajdhani (capital) of Marathi Empire. Raigad was one of the important fort of Maratha Empire. Its height was above 4000 meters and not easy to achieve it.

At Raigad fort, at day of 6th June, 1674 his coronation ceremony was took place with the famous priest (pandit) Gaga Bhatta. He gave the title of "Chhatrapati".

Shivaji Maharaj was not only an ideal king but also but he was an ideal human. He had a very clean character and respects all women. His all-rounder personality made him unique. He expired at the age of 52 years at Raigad, there are so many rumors about his death. Some thought that because of Fever, some people says someone gives poison to him for political favor.

Whatever the reason was. It is clear that he was an intellectual king who fought with powerful enemies of time.
