1.Indian Army was born in 1776. It was East India Company Government in Kolkata that formed the Indian Army.
2.The Indian army controls the highest battlefield in the world, the Siachen Glacier, which is 5000 metres above sea level.
- Indian soldiers are considered
the very best in high altitude and mountain warfare.
4.Unlike other government organisations and institutions in India, there are no provisions for reservations based on caste or religion.
5.When it comes to jungle and high altitude mountain warfare, Indian Army has no match in this world. Russia, UK, USA and several other countries send their armies to Gulmarg based High
Warfare School for training. Similarly, the Counter-insurgency and Jungle Warfare School is also frequently visited by armed forces from those countries for training.
6.The Bailey Bridge – world’s highest bridge is actually built by Indian Army. It is located between the Suru and Dras rivers in Ladakh Valley in Himalayan Mountains. The bridge was built back in 1982.
- In the Battle of Longewala, fought between India and Pakistan in December 1971, on which the famous Bollywood movie “Border” is based, there were only two casualties on the Indian side: 120 Indian Soldiers with 1 jeep mounted M40 recoilless rifle held
fort against 2000 Pakistani soldiers backed by 45 tanks and 1 mobile infantry brigade. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Indian soldiers held their ground throughout the night and with the help of the Air Force, were able to completely beat the enemies.
8.Operation Rahat in 2013 was one of the biggest civilian rescue operations ever carried out in the world.
It was carried out by the Indian Air Force to evacuate civilians affected by the floods in Uttarakhand in 2013.
- The Indian Army is a voluntary service and although a provision for military conscription exists in the Indian constitution, it has never been imposed.
10.Celebrities are often awarded honorary ranks in the armed forces. While Sachin Tendulkar has been granted the rank of Honorary Group captain in the I.A.F, M.S Dhoni is an Honorary Lt Col in the Indian Army. Many film stars including Nana Patekar and Mohan Lal also are conferred with military ranks.
