FIR against celebrities for letter to PM Modi on mob lynching: Indian police. FIR was lodged in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur on Thursday against nearly 50 celebrities, including Ramachandra Guha, Mani Ratnam and Aparna Sen, who wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising concerns about the increasing mob lynching incidents, police said.
The case was lodged two months ago after an order was passed on a petition by local lawyer Sudhir Kumar Ojha by Chief Judicial Magistrate Surya Kant Tiwari.“On August 20, the CJM passed the order, approving my petition upon receipt of which an FIR was lodged here today at the Sadar police station,” Ojha said.
He said that nearly 50 of the letter’s signatories were identified as accused in his petition in which they allegedly “destroyed the country’s image and undermined the Prime Minister’s impressive performance” while “supporting secessionist tendencies.”Police said the FIR had been lodged underparts of the Indian Penal Code, including those relating to sedition, public nuisance, hurting religious feelings, and insulting in an attempt to provoke peace break.
The letter was written in July this year by 49 prominent figures including filmmakers Mani Ratnam, Anurag Kashyap, Shyam Benegal, actor Soumitra Chatterjee, and vocalist Shubha Mudgal.
He said the lynching of Muslims, Dalits and other minorities must be stopped immediately while insisting that “no democracy without dissent” existed. It also pointed out that Jai Shri Ram was reduced to a “provocative cry of war.” News report on FIR against celebrities for letter to PM Modi on mob lynching: Indian police.
