Balut. Telur bebek rebus yang sudah ada janin di dalamnya. Inilah jenis kuliner ekstrem yang ramai diminati. Kaya protein dan renyah!
Memang, nama balut masih asing bagi sebagian warga di tanah air. Tapi, bagi warga Indonesia yang pernah tinggal di Filipina, makanan khas ini tidak akan terlupakan.
Para pemburu kuliner unik dan turis asing tentu tertantang untuk mencicipi balut. Hanya penikmat rasa yang berani mencoba makanan khas warga Filipina tersebut.
Saya, kemudian teringat seorang teman. Kami sama-sama tinggal di Davao City, sebuah kota yang masih dalam wilayah Mindanou. Di kota ini saya menyaksikan, balut menjadi incaran tersendiri para pembeli.
Dari tempat kami tinggal, yang jaraknya sekitar 2 kilometer dari pusat pasar, saya melihat balut dijual di pinggir jalan, supermarket dan pasar tradisional. Penjualnya pun terkadang para 'nyak nyak' yang saban hari menunggu pembeli.
Telur bebek yang sudah berjanin mendapat julukan Aborted Duck. Sering disuguhkan dalam menu hidangan di atas meja dan warung makan. Saya pernah suatu waktu berpikir, bahwa itu telur asin yang sudah disiapkan layaknya di Indonesia.
Di tempat kita, biasanya--apalagi di tempat saya--di atas meja makan kerap tersedia telur asin, sama seperti halnya warung nasi yang menyediakan hal yang sama. Ternyata akan berbeda dengan negara bekas mantan presiden Aquino.
Saat pertama sekali melihat balut, tentu yang terpikirkan adalah 'neuk' atau rasa ingin muntah. Satu sisi ingin mencicipi agar rasa penasaran hilang, tapi urung dilakukan lantaran rasa 'jijik' sudah duluan bersemat di kepala.
Saya tidak pernah berani untuk mencoba mengkonsumsinya. Apalagi bila melihat warna kuning telur yang sudah menjadi warna abu-abu bercampur janin yang terkulai di dalamnya. Hanya sebagian saja yang berwana putih, beda dengan telur rebus biasa.
Seorang teman, kepada saya bercerita. Rasa balut layaknya telur setengah matang. Cara makan pun dengan memecahkan sebagian kulitnya, lalu menyedot cairan di dalamnya, baru kemudian mendapatkan isi bagian telur.
Untuk meyakinkan saya, dia pun menambahkan, saat balut masuk ke dalam rongga mulut, rasanya seperti telur rebus biasa apalagi ditambah sedikit garam. Rasanya layaknya telur asin, bukan rasa dagingnya.
Selama setengah tahun berdomisili di sana, rasa penasaran pun masih ada hingga saat ini. Balut, makanan khas warga Filipina yang saban hari mendapat incaran wisatawan dan warga lokal.
Dengan canda, seorang teman yang lain menegaskan ke saya, jangan bilang pernah ke Filipina jika balut belum menyentuh rongga mulutmu. Hah!

Indeed, the name of balut is still foreign to some citizens in the country. But, for Indonesian citizens who have lived in the Philippines, this special food will not be forgotten.

Me, then thought of a friend. We both live in Davao City, a city still in the Mindanou region. In this city I watched, swathe became the buyer's own target.
