Pacifier Use in Infants

Children begin to be more fond of sucking their fingers or sucking teat towards 2 years of age. The reason for this is the desire to comfort itself. The child who is unable to explain himself fully and who has gained the identity may become frustrated and, because he cannot calm himself, the suction instinct is gradually intensified.

It takes patience and time for the child to learn to calm himself. This job unfortunately does not make it easy to pacifier or finger. Things will go well in that moment, but as the child grows, different problems will start to emerge. It is not possible to stop sucking the finger-sucking child. Because it is a limb of the child to eliminate, to destroy or disrupt the shape of such methods is impossible to apply. Families can apply a variety of methods when leaving pacifiers

There is another reason why we prefer the pacifier. While sucking on the finger, causing the shape change to the sucked finger, the palate structure is very difficult to break and leave.

Pacifier suction should be left at two years of age. This age is the critical age limit. If it continues after this age, it causes deformable deformations. Depending on the case, the child will need to undergo orthodontic treatment at later ages. Sometimes orthodontic treatments may not be enough. Orthognathic surgery may be required in addition to these treatments.

Used to prevent finger absorption. I think it can be theoretically safe and successful, but it is not possible to measure its clinical success yet because it is not in our country.
