There’s Strawberries For That

in inform •  6 years ago  (edited)

I remember my first allergic reaction, it was before I began kindergarten, I had two as a child. The second one happened when I was in 4th grade, I still remember the baby blue pants I was wearing when they took me to the hospital in an ambulance. That’s when it was discovered I’m allergic to avocados. I’m often reminded how delicious they are! Guacamole dips and salads, salsas, etc. are always a crowd favorite but if I eat any of that stuff, things swiftly get out of control. I can’t even let it touch my skin. I carried an EpiPen in my backpack all through school as a kid - I never had to use it!

Fast forward a couple of decades and two benedryl will counter an allergic reaction. No problem - I carried benedryl on me regularly. I’ve been practicing my whole life, I know how to order food, especially sushi or Mexican food, both of those menus have avocado in just about everything! I have to be very specific: “No avocado, please, food allergy.” I learned it’s best to say ‘allergy.’ I can’t even touch it.

The reaction is instant. It happened one time at a Farmers Market and I never touched an avocado, I know better than to touch an avocado, apparently the produce I put my hand on touched an avocado before I touched it - That’s all it takes! The clock starts: First it’s my tongue, within minutes it takes over my lips and cheeks. What happens is, inside my mouth only, my lips and tongue swell up so bad breathing becomes difficult. I have about 15 minutes before the allergy makes its way down my throat and then I’m playing with fire, that’s when things get serious! Those are the times I end up in an ambulance.

I’m at a friends house about 20 years ago, she’s having a birthday party for her daughter. I was in the kitchen by myself grazing on the appetizers and food that was spread out along the counter and dining room table. I had a bowl full of strawberries and I was filling up a second bowl with whatever else while snacking in between. I found out later there was an avocado salad on the counter, I didn’t recognize it at the time I guess but somehow I got into it. My tongue began swelling. I knew exactly what was happening. I didn’t want to frighten anyone so I grabbed my bowl of strawberries and rushed outside to my truck. Now that I wrote that, I realize it reads horribly, I don’t advise hiding all by yourself when you’re having an allergic reaction. I went outside hoping I had some benedryl in my truck or I would have to make a decision - Stat! This is before ‘Yelp’ and touchscreens - I couldn’t just look up the nearest drug store. ‘Looking things up’ was just getting started.

Before I could get out the front door I was a nervous mess! My mouth would have been swelling already, more than likely I’m sweating and I remember beginning to panic! I ate a handful of those strawberries out of nervousness as I rushed outside to my truck and, as I ate them, I could feel the allergy sensation dissipate. Not completely but it was subsiding, I could feel it. The more strawberries I ate, the more the swelling in my tongue and mouth went down. In the middle of freaking out, searching for benedryl, I ate that whole bowl of strawberries and felt surprisingly better. I rushed back inside and continued eating them and the reaction vanished completely. I never found a benedryl, nobody was ever given a reason to be alarmed, in fact, I never told anybody - It worked out great! Check out this double handful of allergy pills:

I don’t always have benedryl in the cupboard but there’s always a box of strawberries in the refridgerator, at least one, it doesn’t run out. I have used strawberries only, to counter an avocado allergy and I’ve had to rely on them three or four times now - Works every time!

Thanks for stopping by @theluvbug and I really appreciate the Resteem!

This is awesome! So amazing that nature's way of healing any problems is just right there. So happy that you continued on with your strawberries rather than having to rely on benadryl or epipens. So much healthier for you too. Actually now that I know this, my daughter is slightly allergic to pineapples. Shes ok to touch it though, it is not as severe. But to eat fresh pineapple, her face starts to have these red swollen blotches here and there. Strawberries will be the first thing I try if it ever so happens that she goes through that again. If not I still have the benadryl just incase. Thank you for sharing. I am grateful for this knowledge!

@foxyspirit, I’m so glad you brought that up! I didn’t want to get over zealous about it but I really wanted to say something like “I’d put strawberries up against any food allergy.” But I reconsidered and just went with what I know.

But now that you brought it up, I’m definitely going to say it: I’d absolutely put strawberries up against that pineapple allergy and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out they counter that one too.

It sure is nice to see you again @foxyspirit! Do let us know, please, should you discover strawberries do the trick for you guys too.

I will definitely let you know! I am more than happy to prove that natural medicines do the trick of any chemical pharmacy crap. Although I understand that the crap is needed for some serious things, I will always try natures remedies first.

Man I miss talking with you. I'm sorry it hasn't been that way much though. I am mentally and physically tired and find it hard to keep up. But What I would like is to ask you to send me or tag me on your posts that you would like for me to see. It helps me out and keeps me focussed on where I want to be. Kind of like being more organized so to speak. At least until I can find my way again, but only if you are up to it. I want to support and be there. These days are just difficult. <3

My pleasure @foxyspirit and I must admit, it sure is nice to be missed. I’ve noticed you’ve been a little distant lately but from what I gather, you have a houseful, absences are understood.

I admire your blog young lady so your encouraging words mean a lot to me. Just know that.

Well thank you Dandays :) I appreciate that. I will never quit the platform just sometimes breaks here and there ;)

Wow man. I have never had an allergic reaction like this. My eczema and asthma flare up when I have alcohol but nothing as bad as the way you described.

Glad you found strawberries saving the day and they are pretty good for you other than saving your life 😀

Well hello @nickyhavey, happy Thursday. They’re literally a life saver. I’m no longer worried about my allergy, it’s great! I even used frozen strawberries one time out of a bag and they worked! My best option is to avoid them and it’s been working going on 40 years now but it’s comforting to know there’s literally a bajillion allergy pills around!

Hey I saw your conversation with @jaynie, when you were gathering info on @theluvbug. It’s a pretty cool initiative, I recommend giving them a follow. They’ve boosted my audience three or four times now with extra exposure and it’s been real beneficial each time. Plus @jaynie takes her time locating quality content. (I think maybe it’s how you found my article, maybe??) oh ya!! Remember that time i mentioned your track? She’s who I mentioned it to.

Anyhow, do consider giving them a follow and using the hashtag for extra exposure. I’ll see you soon!

Thanks for stopping by @nickyhavey.

Yes there is seemingly a pill for everything these days! But really happy you have a natural remedy too, keep a bag of strawberries nearby 😀

Yes I was speaking with her earlier, looks like a great initiative and just wanted to find out about it. It's great that she goes through content and reviews it. I found this article as I follow you 🙂 but yes I got a comment from the luvbug and thought I'd get my detective hat on!

Thanks man, steem/dnb/strawberry on!

Wow that is quite amazing, my wife is allergic to strawberries, I wonder if it will work in reverse.

Is she really?! How incredible would that be to find out they both work together like that?

Should you guys ever have to test that theory, do let
Me know what the results are, how interesting.

Thanks a lot for stopping by @gguy773! When I saw your avocado post I couldn’t help but put both articles together. 👍🏿

I'll see if she is up for for an experiment 😁

I had something witty but I lost it. I'll be right back...

My witty question looks like this:

“You call an hour ‘I’ll be right back’ ?” So what’s the duration typically if you say “gimme a minute?”

Ha! Good morning Ed!

Aaaah I got nothing...Something something...

Does it work for crack cocaine allergy?

Man I’m so thankful I don’t know! I saw people doing weird things on that one, I stayed clear! I never got into those Oxy’s either.

green crack though?! Oh dude...

hahahaha is it for real?

Oh you bet your second album producing assets it’s for real!! There isn’t too many strains who’s name I’m familiar with...
Girls scout.
LA confidential. (Not necessarily in that order)
(Typical OG’s)
Bla
Bla
Green Crack. Oh ya dude, it’s for real!

A sativa with a bangin taste! That’s all I really care about anymore, ‘taste.’ I don’t know how it is around you, but here, the dispensaries n stuff, they got names in lights, literally! Red flashing ticker that runs across the front of these buildings advertising all of the brand names. I’m the same everywhere I go, “just how does it taste?!”

Green crack is delicious! The kind that taste so good on the exhale you just want to chew on a bug like a starburst! Laugh out loud!! It’s a sativa, doesn’t last more than 20 minutes, so they say??

Doesn’t matter the strain though to me, I’m on a cycled exhale every 2.5 - 13 minutes. 😉

JUst you mentioning my second album makes me sweat a little, I am right in the middle of recording/producing and finding distribution company :)

All theses strains sound fantastic!!! Do they show you the terpenes too?

You’re doing great Ed!

Oh for sure they show em! They can’t hide them.

Hey @dandays, I've got a bit of an odd question. Do you or have you ever suffered from hay fever?

Our daughter suffers terribly.I know it's not the same thing, and I know the hay fever tablets she uses don't contain benedryl, but reading this just made my wonder if the awesome Strawberry would help with those allergies too.

I actually do have a mild case of allergies where I’ll get all stuffed up and watery eyes stuff for about a week, at the most, and it’s when the seasons change. Very beginning of spring and very beginning of fall. Sneezing, etc. that stuff.

Nah man, I wish I could say strawberries help me on that one. I know for those few days that week when the seasons change it’s pretty bad though. Hay fever sucks and benedryl is like a sleeping pill.

They’re pretty amazing with avocados though. I’m so impressed with them because it’s been so serious for me that whenever I hear about someone being allergic to ‘peanuts, flour’ etc. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they cured those ones too.

Ah that's a shame... it would of been great if you had discovered a kinda blanket cure for allergies all wrapped up in a little red juicy strawberry.

Agreed, I’ll stay on the lookout.

While we’re on the subject, though, @foxyspirit is a homesteader garden extraordinar, hey foxy, are you aware of any home remedies to counter allergies? My buddy @sivehead right here has a daughter with bad hay fever symptoms - know any natural remedies?

Thank you!
