Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on US President Donald Trump to tone down declarations and actions to avoid escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula after days of exchanges of threats between Washington and Pyongyang.
"The parties involved [in allusion to the US and North Korea] should avoid statements and actions that increase tension," said Xi, who held a telephone conversation with Trump, according to Efe.
The Chinese president also assured his country "is willing to work with the US government to resolve a matter," an official Xinhua news agency reported.
"China and the United States share the interest in denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula," Xi added in a conversation with Trump, which happened at the height of tension with a North Korea that threatened to bomb an island in Guam, a territory controlled by USA in the Pacific.
Hours before the talks between Trump and Xi, China's Foreign Ministry also urged the United States and North Korea to "abandon the old method of demonstrating power" and "control their words and actions."
Shortly before, a newspaper linked to the Communist Party of China, the "Global Times," analyzed the situation of a hypothetical armed conflict between US and North Korea and emphasized that Beijing, in no case, instead of Washington.
According to the newspaper's editorial, a China should be neutral if a North Korea attacks first, but on the other hand, if the US decides to take that step, the Chinese regime should be the best to prevent it.
Trump has on several occasions criticized China, North Korea's main ally, for "doing nothing" to resolve this conflict, and Pyongyang also expressed its displeasure with Beijing after the Chinese government decided to support as economic sanctions against the non- UN Security.
