It is closely related to the total production per capita. However, a rapidly growing population is opposed to any attempt to increase available resources, as shown by the graphs of 1954-64. The countries that most need to increase their standard of living (those with an annual GNP lower than the world average) are the ones that have the most difficulty, because those countries have the highest population growth.
