Election of Lopez Obrador in Mexico bodes ill for relations with US

in informationwar •  6 years ago

The landslide victory of hard-left, anti-American Lopez Obrador is very bad news for US-Mexican relations, NAFTA and immigration issues in the US, especially California. Obrador is on record advocating the 'right' of Mexicans to settle in the US and has, in fact, urged Mexicans to "leave their towns and move to the US." (https://www.nationalreview.com/2018/06/mexico-what-went-wrong-economy-based-on-exporting-poor-people/). This, he has said, is a 'right' that he plans to enforce. How remains to be seen, but it is clear that we're dealing with a leftist jingoist that cannot possibly be good for congenial relations with America. Add that Mexico has a $70 bln surplus in trade with US (second only to China's) and that untaxed remittances from Mexicans in the US are now the highest income stream for the country and I don't see how NAFTA is likely to be extended under the new circumstances. I'll write a longer analytical article about this and the political implications in Calif and US shortly.
