A man who always says “ Hunger has no religion”, yes I would like to introduce Azhar Maqsusi, a man with a big heart.
Azhar Maqsusi feeds upto 150 to 200 people daily near Dabeerpura under Fly-Over, Old Hyderabad. He initiated this program after going through severe conditions in his life.
He always says “ Hunger has no religion”, He is not a rich person,. When TV channels asked him what inspired him to feed the homeless, he responded that he himself knows what it is to go hungry, and wants no one to face the same situation.
Azhar runs a Plaster of Paris interior design business, and started feeding the poor when he saw a physically handicapped woman, Lakshmi, begging near the railway station three years ago. She hadn’t eaten anything for days. In an interview with the Deccan Chronicle, he recalls how “My wife cooked food for around 15 people and I distributed it near the flyover.” Soon he started feeding the homeless daily.
Today he spends nearly Rs 1500 to Rs 1700 daily, mostly from his own pockets to buy 25 kg rice, 2 kg pulses, one litre of oil and spices and ensures no one goes hungry.
Azhar is happy that many friends have joined the cause too, he said, “A lot of friends have joined in and I have got a lot of support but I turn down all the offers that I get in cash. I only take kind.” He also adds that homeless people should be clothed and fed, not given money, since many of them use it to get drunk.
Azhar plans to continue feeding the homeless, and ensure that anyone who comes to him gets at least one meal a day.
