Motivation sucks!

in inspiration •  8 years ago  (edited)

I see a lot of people in my business talking about how important is that you get "motivated" daily...

"How you can conquer whatever you put your mind to if you are motivated"

I have tried multiple times to get motivated, and usually I feel like I'm pushing my mind to do something I really don't care about.

It feels like this "motivation" is forced down my throat...

Something I "have to do" or think in order to accomplish my goals.

Personally, I rather be "INSPIRED" than motivated...

When you are inspired, everything flows naturally...

You loose your mind in the process and get so involved that you might even loose track of time or surroundings...

You feel passionate and fulfilled in your core...

It's like getting "called" with a burning desire inside you...

You can't explain to others because you are the only one that really knows the true potential.

Inspiration is effortless and grows moment by moment.

Since I have experienced both situations, I prefer to be inspired than motivated!

Great to see you put it into words so nicely, @lulita. Reminds me of how in one of my first jobs (as a teenager at a fast-food chain) my manager told me that I was not motivated enough. I remember just looking at him, saying: "Yes, I also believe some motivation would do me good." So he had to admit that the company wouldn't offer any kind of motivation whatsoever, apart from my regular pay, which the gov't would raid for the better part of it anyway.

I'm glad you liked. Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

What you are talking about is the difference between intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Many companies have no clue but it is a hugely important concept. Extrinsic motivation is basically carrot and stick approach: both are bad
Intrinsic motivation is what you describe. Check out Dan Pink: he is a master at explaining this!

Purpose
Is what you have to do aligned with something you support, your own goals and values?

Autonomy
are people micro managing you? Can you take initiative?

Mastery
Do you have control over the things that you are asked to do?

Also check out Scott Adams about passion: his argument is that passion is overrated:
http://blog.dilbert.com/post/102965026826/goals-are-for-losers-passion-is-bull

Correlation is not causation:

Are successful people successful because they were passionate in the first place or
did they find something that worked, got positive feedback loops going and turned passionate because it worked.

It passion was enough, check out American Idol.
All these people are passionate, why aren't they all rockstars then?

Very often we make assumptions in life that are upside down, read Scott's article, will make you think!

Thank you for sharing this video. It's awesome!

I believe that "Inspiration" comes from within (Internal factor), but "motivation" comes majorly from an external source. Both could work hand-in-hand

Yes, thank you for your comment.

Either I'm passionate about something, or I'm not. If I am, then usually I'm "all in," and it's awesome. If not, then even if I can make myself PHYSICALLY do something, my brain will simply veto it, and whatever I'm doing will become such complete rubbish, that it won't be worth doing it, at all.

Of course, nowhere is this more obvious than with writing...

(One does not SIMPLY... force oneself to write!)

Ah, the joys of living with ADD! ^_^

I'm exactly like that. Thank you.

If anyone wonders why I haven't written anything good for Steemit yet... -laugh-

That's funny.

Totally agree, and not just for writing, but singing, eating, playing sports, having sex, teaching, or helping others. If you try to force these (and most other things), you get a half-ass result, at best.

Exactly.

Lol motivation is good in some aspects and inspiration in others. It goes hand an hand in my opinion.

I appreciate your opinion. Thank you.

This is so true. Sometimes the lack of motivation is what you need to work through whats holding you up! I just write about my lack of motivation and then usually I come to a resolution. This reminds me of an old article I wrote. I may have to post that. Thanks for the inspiration!

My pleasure. Tag me when you post it to read it!

i beleive a fine balance is needed like gre3n they come hand in hand

Thank you for your feedback.

Good post - upvoted - Feeling inspired is the best - so cool to sit down and write when inspired - love the feeling

Yes, it's so rewarding...

Totally agree with you, motivation always leads to idle thinking whereas inspiration actually makes you work.

Exactly how I feel. When you are inspired everything is spontaneous.

Yes, exactly, and if we wait for motivation to come then we won't get much done. Motivation comes and goes but that it's that inner wisdom and guidance, if we let it that truly inspires in the long term. Thanks for sharing @lulita

True motivation will come naturally, if not, time to take another look at the thing you are trying to get motivated about.

Thanks Lulita, you inspire me to work on my next post :o)

I'm glad. 😀

I love this! As a fitness addict and teacher, I too experience days where I don't exactly feel motivated, but instead, inspired. I remind myself daily that my only limit is me. And on the days that I am not feeling motivated, I say, "Start where I am. Use what I have. Do what I can." And that's good enough! :)

Love your attitude.

Thank you.

Thanks!!

@lulita Awesome thoughts for being inspired vs being motivated. I believe that there is a thin line between the two. Being inspired is looking forward for a best product to be produce vs being motivated is like doing the best of your ability to produce the best possible product

That's a great way to see it... Thanks for your comment.

I was never a big fan of classic motivation, you put it very well: Being inspired is just that more powerful than being motivated.

Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.

Nicely said, I got interested from reading the title. Good article by the way. Looking forward to read more from you and I followed you too :)

Thank you. I'm glad you liked it!

I disagree, without motivation you will never achieve. Just make sure you are motivated towards your own goals and not some other persons.

Did you read the whole post?

Being inspired without being motivated is pointless. I can have all the inspiration in the world and with no will to actually do it, what will happen?

When you are inspired, you are already motivated to do whatever you plan to do because everything is flawless...
When you are just motivated, without inspiration, not necessarily you do whatever it takes to get your goals.

Both in equal measure, balance in all things.

Yes, balance is good.
