The Gospel of Saint Matthew tells us how Jesus prays in Gethsemane before being arrested, it is there that Jesus teaches us an inspirational quote: "Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ´Couldn't you men keep watch with me for an hour?´ he asked Peter. ´Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.´", Matthew 26:40-41.
Jesus sees the future and knows that his destiny is the crucifixion, it is there that he shows us how the flesh and the spirit are opposed in man, on the one hand the spirit seeks the truth and God; and the corporeal, the mundane avoid pain and suffering.
In man there is an inclination towards the temporal and an inclination towards the eternal, the immortal; sometimes these inclinations can be united as for example when the prosperity that wisdom gives us and the fear of God (constancy, devotion, equanimity, stability) go hand in hand, but in other situations, they can be opposite and separated.
Jesus with his example explains to us that we must always seek the spiritual above all things in order to be truly blessed despite the difficulties that the world poses for us. The apostle Paul explains the difference between the flesh and the spirit:
"For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do - this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Romans 7:19-25.
