Augustus Waters was a basketball athlete until his leg was amputated to stop the osteosarcoma he had. Since then he uses the metaphor of smoking without smoking, that is, "put the lethal weapon in your mouth and not let him kill you". Gus lightens the crude truth with its metaphors. He is strong, optimistic and teasing.58db68af46aa1.jpeg

Hazel and Gus spend more and more time together but Hanzel prefers not to get involved with Gus because "I am a grenade, one day I will explode and destroy everything in my path and I do not want to hurt you. Okay?".

But every day that passes they realize that there is no time to lament because there is only today and now. The fault lies with the stars because they were not born under it.

Gus decides to do everything possible to fulfill Hazel's dream of meeting writer Peter Van Houten, author of his favorite book An Imperial Pain that leaves an open ending that Hazel would like to close.

Gus finally gets a trip to Amsterdam to meet the writer Peter Van Houten but before traveling Hanzel must be hospitalized giving the trip a new dimension by having it close to death.

When Hazel and Gus arrive in Amsterdam they find an alcoholic and moody Peter Van Houten who does not want to answer any questions. The agent of Peter apologizes to the couple and offers them in exchange for the bad time a dinner and a hotel that makes the romantic stay.
Hazel is curious to know many questions about events and characters in his favorite book, an imperial affliction, and writes his reasons to the author of it. P. Van Houten, who resides in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, looking forward to his answers, and Augustus also sympathizes with Hazel in his task to try to obtain his "urgent" answers. Then Augustus communicates with the assistant Lidewij, in order to please Hazel in his desire to communicate with Van Hounten.

Hazel, in her desire to clarify her doubts, wants to travel to Amsterdam as she does, talks to her mother and she will do everything possible to please her. While Augustus is invited to Hazel's house and they share a meal, and ... more walks are known even more.

Walks that revolved around subjects allusive to Holland and to want to have an encounter with the exiled P. Van Hounten, (who by the way wrote to Gus).

Hazel had a relapse, her parents took her immediately to the hospital, and Augustus went to visit her, that served as consolation in the midst of her unfortunate illness, and among all of this they receive communication from P. Van Hounten and Miss Lidewij, the first not as clear and effusive as the second.

And finally came the long-awaited day of traveling to Amsterdam, so Hazel kills the anxiety of being able to hear from Fr. Van Haounten himself the answers to the questions that were posed, about his only written book, an imperial affliction.

They arrive in Amsterdam after a long trip, take a taxi, arrive at a hotel whose rooms had the name of philosophers ... and the couple prepared to meet and have some fun in the city. They have dinner in a restaurant, they talk and their food is paid for by P. Van Hounten, which in fact remains an almost obsessive subject for them, because they comment and reread again and again "an imperial affliction". And they go to the house of Van Hounten himself and his welcome was not the most appropriate for him, not his assistant.

Van Hounten was an ill-mannered, morose and mordant man, and even so, Hazel insists on asking how certain characters in his novel end ... ..Van Hounten responds with disdain: "The hamster dies peacefully while he sleeps" ............... "The tulip-man is metaphorically God "............... .. are fictional characters!" He said while drinking whiskey drinks.

"The characters that inhabit it, are not outside these lines" -recalco-. Treating it in an offensive and insulting manner, and Hazel continued with her questions being even more insistent and reiterative. Teasing, snubbing and discourtesy is what Hazel was getting, while Lidewij tried to stop his rudeness. Hazel defended herself and they left; but his assistant pursued them, persuading Hazel to visit the house of Anne Frank, and apologizing for the arrogant behavior of the writer.

Lidewij takes them back to the hotel, they were disappointed by what happened with the writer, but that did not stop them from surrendering to love.

And so he concluded his travels to Holland, returning to his country, E.U.A.

But Augustus suffers a relapse and lives moments of his terminal illness, Hazel and his worried family attend him and give him all their support. Ya Gus is not the same, he was in a wheelchair and his health had deteriorated noticeably, it was a sign that he was in his last stage, he vomited what he ate, he slept a lot in addition to the discouragement of knowing that cancer was wreaking havoc. that he could with his family and Hazel, those last moments and pleasant memories. Gus was really bad, Hazel called 911.

I need an ambulance is urgent! -Communicating to 911. - They took him to the hospital and return home ... but he was already in his last days, they returned to the support group, Augustus lucia emaciated, and his pleasant conversations of love had changed to death talks.

And so it was Gus, he died in the U.C.I. where cancer finally stopped his heart, he was with his parents and sisters, warning Hazel, and this is Isaac, where they felt an indescribably bitter and desolate pain. It was unbearable and heartbreaking but he felt that he should live his intimate mourning.

His family and intimate friends attended his funeral, in addition to the writer P. Van Hounten, dressed in white, blue and green. Hazel saw it but at that moment it was only for her Augustus, at the time of the funeral she decides to leave, she was tired and too distressed to endure it. But P. Van Hounten approaches her and tries to speak (as a polite and courteous being), but she remembered how she behaved with them in Holland and did not pay attention to their conversation, she did not care, he had left in his memories too much disappointment and insolence to be so kindly receptive to listening to him.

Hazel and everyone returned to their lives, their ups and downs, to the surprise of Hazel, the writer was still with her ... until he found him in his car, (nothing pleasant for the girl but he insisted), be honest and leaving behind his arrogance, he confessed that her daughter had died of cancer, she could not stand it, that's why alcohol was part of her unsurpassed resignation.

Hazel continues to relive and feel his memories with infinite love, but at the same time destroyed by his departure. He wanted to die, but he thought about his parents, that did not want at times, just live what touched him and continue ... .. what else? A small breath of gratitude appeared in her when she learned that her mother was preparing to be a socially supportive worker, "and thus help the family in crisis" - said the mother - showing her a touch of encouragement and an emotional smile.

They visited the tomb of Gus ... and finally Hazel contacted Lidwij to know those pages that Gus wrote to P. Von Hounten about the feelings and emotions that revolved wildly around Hazel ......... .. Their love candid, pure and terminal.

Under the same star, published in January 2012. Green says that the title of the book was inspired by William Shakespeare's famous phrase "Guilt, it is not of our stars, but of ourselves, that we consent to be inferior! "

It has been considered one of the best realistic novels of recent years. The author's source of inspiration was Esther Grace Earl (hence her middle name, Grace), who suffered from lung cancer, dying on August 25, 2010 at age 16, who struck up a great friendship by meeting at a children's hospital . Esther helped the author develop the character.

About our performance in life, our relationships with those around us, the feelings of the human being such as love and friendship, family, we live trying to give the best, but on the way we forget the importance of the wonderful moments that we live with each of them and that at some point we can not escape the death that always reaches us, and GOD gives us the blessing that we ourselves direct every chapter of our history ....
