Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889 in Lambeth, England. He made his acting debut at the of age five, when he replaced his mother in a play. In 1913 he arrived in Hollywood, and the following year he shot 35 shorts that lasted between 12 and 16 minutes.
Such was the success of these productions that, in 1918, he signed a contract with the First National producer, for 1 million dollars. In 52 years of his career, he participated in 80 films, of which only five were spoken.Undoubtedly, his best-known character is Charlot, the handsome mustache man who uses cane bowler. - He was the first actor to appear on the Time's magazine cover and in a comic strip ( Pa's Imported Son-in-Law in 1916).
- He never managed to win the Oscar in the category of performance, but he received the honorary prize in 1928 and 1972 and one more to Better soundtrack.
- He was a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948.
- On one occasion, he participated in an impersonator contest of Charles Chaplin. Despite representing Charlot, he failed to reach the finals.
- The Great Dictator (1940) was his first spoken tape. In it he defied the Nazism, reason why it was prohibited in Germany. In spite of it, it is said that Adolf Hitler saw it twice.
- Due to political problems that involved him with communism and anti-American activities, he was exiled to Switzerland in 1952, where he spent the rest of his life.
- When he met Albert Einstein at a meeting, the scientist expressed his admiration and said: "What I have always admired about you is that your art is universal. Everyone understands and admires you." In response, Chaplin commented: "Your work is much more respectful, everyone admires you and practically nobody understands."
Chaplin died on December 25, 1977, while he slept.
