Several years back I was trying to find some information on something... retro. For the life of me, I can't remember what that was. I came across a website called The Retroist. This site consisted of posts about retro television, classic movies, forgotten toys, and a bunch of other stuff. The Retroist encouraged the visitors of the site to submit posts of their own. I thought, "Well, that's cool." So I submitted the story about my first computer. Eventually I would submit video game reviews too.
The Retroist also has a podcast where he discusses pop culture from his youth. In some instances, he talks about movies or television shows that existed before he was born. He always starts the podcasts with a story about himself relating to the subject matter. For example, when he discusses the film Monster Squad, he talks about how his friends used that movie to play a joke on him. Or on the Retroist podcast episode about the ColecoVision, he tells about how he almost got one for free at a mall's lost & found.
This website & podcast are fantastic. I wanted to be apart of it. So I asked if he was interested in doing video versions of the podcasts. The Retroist told me that he had been thinking of that for a while. He knew I enjoyed video editing and eventually I did a video version of the podcast about the Coleco ADAM computer. When I first started these Retroist Video Podcasts, I would hand-draw his stories (at the very beginning of every podcast episode) using a mouse, later an external drawing tablet and eventually on my Surface Pro 3. My drawing skills were lacking so I started using clip art. Think that turned out to be a good decision...
I've made several so far covering computers, movies, cartoons, video games, Halloween, Christmas, and even television commercials. So go here to watch! Are you a fan of The Retroist? Let me know.
