It is is 5 years today Boko Haram insurgents abducted over 200 girls from a boarding school in Borno State, released about half of them subsequently, leaving basically another half in their 'custody'. The world has never been at peace with that reality and has kept stating its horror about it. Today in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city, activists of all hues will be reflecting on the nightmare.
Leah as then
Organised around a lecture, it is featuring Aisha Abubakar, with a special message from Aliyyah Yesufu, icons of the Bring Back Our Girls, (BBOGs) movement that has been reminding the world. Organised around the theme: The Agony of Chibok Girls: The Shame of a Nation", it will last the second part of the day. A same set of activities took place yesterday in Lagos, the former capital city.
The Nigerian Government has been suggesting that the release of the remaining Chibok Girls has been hampered by division among the terrorists. In the case of Leah Shuaibu who is the only girl among those captured from Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi in Yobe State, the government claimed that free passage is the fear of the terrorists in returning her. She was grabbed among 105 others in February 2018.
Surprisingly, the issue of the release of the remaining Chibok Girls as well as that of Leah Shuaibu did not feature much in the recently concluded General Elections in Nigeria.
