Psychology Behind Your Outfit Choices
Hi Steemians!
For my second post I would like to ask you a question. Have you ever wondered whether the choice of outfit you wear truly affects your mood or even your performance? I recently read an article by Elle Magazine on this topic and I connected right away and wanted to share it with you! I truly found myself nodding at every bit of information that poured out of the pages and I couldn't help to wonder if any of you have ever thought about this particular topic? In 2012, Dr. Karen Pines conducted a case study at the University of Hertfordshire, which examined the connection between women's daily outfits and their emotional states. "Many women mentioned they could alter their mood, by changing up what they wore each day." I love fashion but mostly I love how clothing truly expresses how I feel daily. So in my opinion, below I have listed a few emotions or particular moods such as Confident, Nervous, Tired, and Happy and have paired it with its most common outfit choices.
Mood: Confident
This Black Bodycon Dress from Amazon had me feeling really confident this past Monday morning and I was ready to get the week started. When your feeling empowered, there is nothing like putting on that black dress that enhances the body and reminds you of past feelings of achievement!
Mood: Nervous
Feeling nervous for a work presentation? Or maybe work deadlines are fast approaching? Try reaching for a formal business outfit in your closet and let the outfit do the thinking. Psychology professor Abraham Rutchick states that what we wear affects how our brains operate, mostly because we look at the bigger picture rather than sweating the small things.
Mood: Tired
At times when we are feeling worn out, we tend to slip into a more comfortable and casual style which requires minimal effort and thought. Usually this outfit is a combination of jeans, t-shirt, sweater and sneakers or those favorite sweat pants we all love to wear once we get home. I tend to wear this style of outfit on the weekends when I am running multiple errands with the family.
Mood: Happy
When you are happy, you naturally gravitate toward bold and bright colors. Everyone's definition will vary, but Dr. Pine states that "happy clothes" are typically flattering, well made, and in bright colors.
So in conclusion, I believe that clothing does not only reflect how others perceive you, it also reflects and influences your mood. Whether you wake up feeling confident, happy, nervous or tired, the clothes you picked out were a direct reflection of your mood, even if you weren't consciously aware of it. Do you think this true for you?
