Hello (Steemit) World!

in introducemyself •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello to the Steemit community! I’ve been on and off lurking on Steem for months now but now that my semester at school is coming to an end, I felt like it’s time to write my first post here. So here is my introduceyourself post for you all so I can feel like I’m officially a part of this wonderful community!

Cabernet

I go by “cabernet” because one of my favorite types of wine is Cabernet Sauvignon. I currently live in the Midwest in the United States and have been living here for almost a decade now. Originally, I am from a small mountainous country in South Asia, Nepal. I was born in a small town surrounded by beautiful mountains on the East, West, and North and the biggest forest of the country on the South. Growing up with scenic hills, mountains, rivers, and beautiful landscapes around me all the time, I LOVE nature; being outside and soaking up the raw beauty of this planet gives me a different kind of high. Here’s a picture of me right before hiking up one of the trails in Colorado Springs when I first visited Colorado 3 summers ago:

I like adventure and thrill. I never learned how to swim and the fact that I’m terrified of large bodies of water makes me stay away from activities like rafting. The only adventurous thing I’ve crossed off my bucket list would be paragliding. Last December when I visited my family and friends in Nepal for the first time since I had moved to the US, my cousins and I made this last-minute decision and just went for it:

Culture Shock

Moving to the US in my mid-teenage years and adapting to the culture here was quite a challenge at first. The culture shock got me good and I was mostly quiet and kept to myself the first couple of years. As I started college, I was more or less compelled to get out of my comfort zone. I started understanding the norms here and as my accent got better, I felt more confident speaking with people, asking questions, and listening. After my sophomore year of college, I became a lot more social and approachable. And the rest is history… Overall, I understand what it’s like to move across the world and not have a lot of things in common with people that you interact with on the daily. So, when I come across people who are new to the US in my university, I feel what they must be going through.

I’m a semester away from finishing up graduate school with my Master in Computer Science degree. There are a lot of international students in my college that come from countries all over the world and because of what I went through with culture shock when I first moved here, I’ve started striking up conversations with people that sit next to me in class; especially the international students. This isn’t difficult to do for me now. It helps that I’m a good listener. So, I start by asking questions and things just flow from there. After all, who doesn’t like talking about themselves, right? 😊 I like hearing stories first-hand from them; listening to their stories about how they came to the US and to our University, what their life was like back in their country, how they feel about living in the states now, etc. helps me learn a lot about people and their cultures. I enjoy listening more than talking in most situations and I think this has made me friendly, approachable, and somewhat consoling.

Passions

Despite growing up in a very patriarchal society, I was fortunate enough to have parents that believed that everyone deserves equal treatment and equal education. Because of that, my parents always motivated me and my siblings to do our best and give our best at everything we did. Funny enough, my college major ended up being Computer Science which put me back into environment that was mainly male-dominated which made me work harder to excel at my field of study. In the future, I want to promote STEM and Women In Science and Engineering back in my home country where women still lack proper education and equity in the society. I believe that education is the key to leading a fruitful life and everyone deserves to be allowed to open their minds to the endless possibilities, ideas, and opportunities literacy has to offer.

I want all women, especially young girls, to understand that looks shouldn’t be the only thing that will bring food to their plates or get others’ attention. Instead of seeking successful partners, I dream of a world where young girls strive for excellence themselves. This, in turn, will scare off most people that still dwell on primitive thinking that women are only to sit still and look pretty for them to show off. With social media taking over every aspect of our lives, I think this is one the main lessons we can teach young minds.

Interests

I am very interested in travelling, especially to places that are naturally beautiful. My travel-to list consists of countries like Switzerland, Norway, New Zealand, mountains of Canada, Peru, Greece, Indonesia, Philippines, etc. Once I graduate, I first plan on travelling across my home country since I didn’t really have a chance to do that when I was 15 and left. While I’m there, I plan on bungee jumping, sky-diving, lots of hiking, and fully experiencing the beauty of my homeland.

Another major part of my life is fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle. I started lifting about 3 years ago and have continued this journey ever since. Over the course of the years, I’ve learned so much about good form, eating healthy, and keeping the mind and body both fit. I practice transcendental meditation (TM) as it helps me organize my thoughts while helping me keep the college stress level as low as possible.
Some of my other interests include photography, watching documentaries, horror/psychological movies, and stand-up comedy, self-improvement books, and doing some fake “photoshoots” to occasionally re-ignite the little bit of interest I have in modeling which I never really pursued. Here is me in my cultural outfit modeling for my sister :D

I grew up with dogs, cats, cows, goats, pigeons, and chicken always around our mini-farm in my childhood home so I have a soft-spot for animals. Ever since I moved to the states, I’ve wanted to have a pet but with school being hectic and apartments being difficult when it comes to pets, once I graduate and move down South for my job, I plan on getting a little puppy of my own.

Overall, I look forward to graduating, starting a new life in Texas, and learning, excelling, and growing along the way.

So, this is me, cabernet, telling you a little bit about myself. Thank you so much for reading!

I applaud you so much for this. I wish more young girls realized their potential and started working on themselves instead of idolizing superficiality and empty popularity. As women we don't have to abandon our feminine traits to grow, just to realize that it is only a part of the whole that we can become.

Welcome to Steemit! It seems that you have a lot of interesting things to say, looking forward to read more from you. :-)

Hi @cabernet, welcome to steemIt this is a wonderful place.

Hey cab (I hope I am allowed to shorten cabernet that way ;)!)
Glad you got on steemit, seems like you have a lot to tell.

With social media taking over every aspect of our lives, I think this is one the main lessons we can teach young minds.

I think that social media and the resulting constant comparing with others leads to many mental issues - especially for younger girls since they often compare themselves to models and other celebs. Social media is great - but that's definitely one of the downsides to it.

Different topic - You mentioned you want to travel to Switzerland - If Austrias mountains are fine as well, you might check my blog for some hike reports ;)

Greets and have fun on steemit!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Hey austrianguy! Cabernet was already shortened, jeez! Haha.

I had just read a blog by @rok-sivante about the DOs and DONTs on steem and the key point was making and allowing quality comments on people's blogs. Thanks for your remarks and an invite to check out your page. Very cool stuff!

Cabernet isn't that short :P
I think you should try to find your own unique style - Just watch @bypaul's blog for example. He hasn't been around long but his posts are already working - And he is not even that active in the community!
Using styled textes + with good pictures to underline content is the way to go!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or in the chat!

Cabernet is an amazing wine. Looks like you're living your life up to your namesake.
Good luck on all your adventures. Looking forward to seeing you move forward and up!

Welcome to Steemit! You are beautiful! :)

hi there @cabernet! So happy to find you here. I love connecting with new friends from all over the world. I will follow you and I hope you do the same so we can stay connected. :)

Hello @cabernet! I am @gogogadgetupvote and your post has been selected by @jznsamuel as an entry in my [DAILY INTRODUCEYOURSELF POST BOUNTY] contest! I have Upvoted and Resteemed your post, as well as given you a follow! Thanks for joining the platform and taking the time to introduce yourself! I will be keeping an eye out for your future posts!

Welcome to steemit.. its a wonderful community..

My advice to you is that you should visit blogs of other people and comment on them first. Dont write your posts yet because you have less followers and that blog will get so many less views. Make your following this way and then start writing posts
May the power of cryptos be in your favour
Regards

Thank you for the handy tip!

Sry, but I don't think thats a good advice - Why not comment on others while still posting yourself ;) I mean you don't need to post every day - but just commenting for weeks won't help I think...

The hike was rough but yes totally worth it. They actually have a helicopter that will take u there.

Welcome to steemit and this is one of the best introduceyourself posts I have seen!

I'd love to see some posts about transcendental meditation; as that is something I have never heard about before.

Hi cabernet! Nice too meet you here...

Welcome..... to the new world. Cheers.

Welcome to steemit dear, the adventures should be parts of our life, best regard.

Welcome to the steemit :)

Thanks for sharing. Your writing is very easy to read. i bet you would be easy to hold a conversation with. When you are in the states you should check out havisupia falls in nevada! Seems like it would be something u would enjoy.
Check out an earlier post i made about it

Great video! The hike on the rocky trails sounds rough but I'm sure the view of that waterfall made it worth it. Beautiful pictures and well put together videos!

Welcome to a fellow Bitcoin enthusiast, cabernet!! I hope you will enjoy your time here on Steem! Look forward to your upcoming posts, mate!

Great introduction. We're glad to have you on Steemit and hope you enjoy the community here!

this is only upvoted because of your name. lol. we used to imagine playing king pong, but donkey pong is the best. Good phrase. I think of millions of words and phrases, but some i've never thought of.

Welcome! Thank you for a comprehensive introduction post! I've been moderately active since August and am enjoying it here so far. I hope that you enjoy it here as much as I have!

Welcome. I pray things turn around for you. Good luck!

Every venetian would be proud and envy your nickname.. less Internet, more cabernet!!

Welcome to Steemit cabernet and I'm sure you'll have a great time here!! :)

Welcome to Steemit. Glad to have you on Steemit. I like your posting.

I hope you do get to come visit New Zealand when you get the chance, it is indeed a wonderful place. :D

I applaud your determination to break away from that patriarchal mindset and your desire to be a positive role-model for other females. Leaving home at fifteen shows just how much you can achieve, with the drive you've displayed so far.

Welcome to the Steemit community. :)

Thank you @ravenruis! It hurts to witness so much potential and intelligence in so many women around the world go to waste because of lack of self esteem, lack of support, or the worst, lack of opportunity.

hi pretty..... lovely so much, how you fly like that..... I am so much jealous, but by the way... you are so much great to fly.... I can not do that, OMG the view is good but .... I can not tell you, I just nervous. its very bad to me. maybe you can teach me to fly together... I will make exception maybe.... hehehe , have nice babe @cabernet and good luck

Hello, Cabernet, and welcome to Steemit.

Thanks for the interesting "intro" post. It had a nice balance of interesting info re you and your background / interests on the one hand, and your plans for the future on the other. All accented with a few great photos. (That is a decent template for future posts ... something you might want to keep in mind.)

Looking forward to your coming posts on Steemit. With your background, insights, and various experiences, I'm sure you have a lot to bring to this community.

Best of luck, and Full Steem Ahead.

Thank you @majes.tytyty! Following you!

Cool. I'll follow you, too, and hope to read some interesting posts from a cross-cultural perspective.

p.s. A few years ago, I spent 6 days in Pokhara. Stayed in a guesthouse high on a cliff over looking the lake. Had an excellent and very relaxing time, and an overall grand experience in Nepal.

Pokhara is beautiful isn't it? Unfortunately, I haven't been there yet but I plan on when I go next. I'm glad you had a good experience there! :)

Welcome onboard, Cabernet. Those are some amazing pictures that you have shared. Moving to a new place from where you were bought up is always diffucult. Good that you have adjusted well now. I enjoyed reading your introduction. Keep sharing more such post and enjoy Steeming. :)

Thank you @firepower!! :)

You are welcome, dear.

Hi there! I found you via the @welcoming account, which is run by my steemit-friend @theaustrianguy. You got a quite a eventfull life going on! Skydiving and Nepal are still (very high) on my list. I would love to read some reports about your travels and see some pictures :D

Thank you @bypaul!

Followed you right away so please dont disappoint me :P

Oh my, no pressure at all haha

Photography and traveling huh. Definitely following!!

Haha I hope you can handle a little pressure. There is already so much spam on steemit so I try to teach all the new people the right way.

You are doing great so far!

I love seeing that you are an adventurer! Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the platform!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Thank you @karensuestudios! :)

I see you're into fitness yourself. Here's another flower! 😊

Welcome to steemit.

I wanted to get into TM but I have a bit of trouble to find some material to start with. Could you recomned me a youtubechannel?

Enjoy your stay here

Thank you for the comment, flipstar! As far as I know, you have to learn TM form a licensed TM teacher in person. I'm not aware of what other options there are regarding how to get started with TM other than visiting the sites that offer this choice in person. If you want to get into meditation in general, there are many different types but for TM, I don't think online videos will be helpful. I may be wrong though. I learned it ~8 years ago and haven't had the need to go back.

Why Cabernet;
Lovely Intro! I got a great 1st Impression of an Open minded, interesting Young Lady. Hope to stay in touch and follow you on your adventures. I feel like we have some things and dreams in common. Feel free to contact me regarding travel Infos, i ve been to more then 35 countries outside of europe so far. Welcome, and if you like follow me.
