Greetings Steemians!
I have been here a little over a week experimenting and trying to understand Steemit. I think I've got it ... maybe. Bear with me. I'm learning and trying out all kinds of things.
At first, I don't think I'll be sharing much about myself on Steemit, except for my photography. However, I'll share one thing with you now. I have a condition called synesthesia. Hearing and vision overlap for me. I wouldn't exactly say I "see" sounds, but there is a visual quality to sounds (music is spectacular). Not sure how else to describe it. To a lesser extent, the reverse sensation is also true -- I "hear" things I see.
Few people know about my synesthesia. I rarely talk about it because people usually think I am crazy or seeking attention. I mention it here because many of the photographs I produce are influenced by the condition. Specifically, I am drawn to textures and repeating patterns which often have an audible quality to me. Shadows fascinate me also.
On that note, enjoy some clover:
Often, my posts may seem a little bizarre. I have a dry sense of humour. It's fun when people get the humour. It's also amusing when they don't.
Oh, and about the bots ... I will be using bots and vote-buying services early on. I know many people feel passionately that these services degrade the quality of Steemit. I get it. Definitely, I have mixed feelings about these services. Hang in there. I am experimenting and I must admit that these services are fun. I simply need to experience this shady part of Steemit to fully understand it. Don't be too annoyed with me. I plan to stop using them in the foreseeable future.
Now, please engage in some meaningful discussion with my new buddy @banjo who has lately been the first to respond to my posts. He is a man of great insight and wisdom. ;-)
Welcome to Steem @opaulo I have upvoted and sent you a tip

PLEASE explain to me how you got a reputation score of 44 when you have only been here for a couple weeks? I want to increase my score, it has taken me almost 2 months of daily posting and curating... How did you do it?

Hmmm. I'm not sure. I have been doing a lot of experimenting in different ways just attempting to fully understand the platform. I have done a lot of voting and a fair amount of commenting. Some of my commenting has been quite frivolous. For example, check out the completely ridiculous conversation I had with two bots on this post. I am not recommending that you do these things and I am certainly not going to continue with this nonsense.
I could have this wrong, but I think I read that reputation increases logarithmically. That is, a reputation of 51 is 10 times "more" than a reputation of 50. So currently, your reputation is way way way higher than mine. I really have not contributed much to the community yet.
Thanks for your comment. I hope this is helpful. :-)

Thanks for the reply. Still don't get it, I have been doing a lot of commenting and voting too. Yesterday I saw a woman who on her FIRST post had a score of 48. No comments or articles. I do NOT understand how that works, and it makes me a little nervous about the validity of the scores.

Yes, that sounds very strange. If you want to see what kinds of activities people are engaging in, you can use a link like this:
https://steemd.com/@steemit
Replace the "@steemit" part with the ID of the person you wish to look at. It will show you everything they do. That might give you some clues as to what they did.

Reputation isn't about authored posts. It is about how many upvotes a person's replies to other authored posts get. You could never post and gte a 70 reputation. :)
This is how it should work. If high reputation people know for a fact that the person they are helping out is genuine and good quality, the new person's reputation should sky rocket quickly.
It isn't a function of their time here. It's how much quality other people feel they will bring to the platform. I don't need a lot of time to know that @opaulo will bring a ton of good content as an example.

@tip!
I think that is how it works...
I did a post promising to tip anyone who could explain this to me...
So if I were to devise a strategy to just try to up my score, I should stop posting my own content and just try to write great comments on whale's posts...?

Well, our posts don't get seem much sadly. You just don't get a lot of high reputation upvotes from posts. All the low rep bots in the world with barely any SP can upvote us without much affect.
There are two tactics to grow quickly on here. Both require good content. By good content I mean quality and meaningful writing. You can either:
Author a post with quality and valuable (based on what others think is valuable, not you) content. Then that post gets resteemed to have it seem by a lot of people.
Post a quality reply to an already popular person's reply. Your reply has to be valuable, appropriate, and add to the conversation in a meaningful way though. You cannot just post random replies. You can see some from my past that have paid a lot of money and got me a lot of positive attention.
Adding SP to your account helps too, for people tend to do what they do offline. They follow the money so to speak. More SP attracts more followers. I'm slowly adding my own SP to my account, and I have noticed that it helps.
Still, you don't need to add any SP if your content and replies are top notch. Look for posts in subjects you can add to the conversation in a good way. That's one thing I do. I'll only post replies on posts I know my opinion matters on and that people will benefit from reading.
Your reputation helps you get seen better on other people's posts too since the replies are sorted by reputation then how many votes the reply gets. The higher it is in the list, the more likely people will read it. That gets you more followers and upvotes.
I'm following you now by the way! :)
P.S. You have 51 rep. That's not bad at all. You must be doing well over all, or you wouldn't have it.

It is easy to explain. He has been upvote "effed" by someone with a lot of reputation. The more reputation a person has, the more powerful their upvote is to a new person. For example, if I see a kick ass person based on their content and writing, I will often "upvote eff" them. That's... well... crude. But the description fits. I'll go through their replies and 100% upvote them all. That will take a new 25 reputation to the high 30's. My reputation is only 55 though. Imagine if a person with a reputation of 70 did it instead! Then the new person could easily go from 25 to 55 in only a short time.

Hey, welcome! I have taken the time the last couple days to go through new account intro posts. Yours was in the list today. The clover picture, to some people at least, would seem rather boring. Let me tell you why I greatly enjoyed it.
First, I dabble in herbalism, and clover is a great plant for sooo many reasons. As a child I would eat the flowers. Bees love them to make excellent honey too. It is also visually pleasing. I look at that photo and emotionally relax. It is soothing to the soul so to speak.
I'm always most at ease when in the wilderness. Forest green is my favorite color too. Green is the true color of life, and nature provides us with everything we'd ever need to thrive.
Your tactic about the bots is reasonable. I messed with them at first. What I found though is that they did very little good. Even the MSP service wasn't much help unfortunately. I'd use all the bots, etc. Then the post would only have those as replies. There'd be no good conversation, no learning, and no emotional enjoyment by anyone involved. I stopped using them quickly in favor of more personal tactics (like going through intro posts).
Speaking of intro posts, I will end this rambling now with the usual content I share with new people to help them out. It's the type of content a bot would share, but I never share it by itself. There's always a personal hand typed note above it to connect with the person in a real way.
It's a pleasure to meet you, and I look forward to your future content!!!
...
There are a ton of other webpages to help you with Steemit. Here are some of the best for beginners:
https://steemd.com/ (This site is used to keep track of your voting power and other stats. You do not want to run out of voting power, and you only get so much per day. I keep my voting power around 80% for example.)
https://steem.makerwannabe.com/ (This site will tell you who follows you, who unfollows you, and who mutes you. It is great for meeting new people too. I regularly check it to see who has followed me to see if I should follow them back.)
https://steemit.chat/ (This site is the official chat webpage for Steemit. There are Discord channels too, but I usually stick to the official site. Come in to network and meet new friends. You can directly message people there too, so it makes it easier to communicate with your closest friends.)
Oh yeah, there are a lot of bots on here. If you see a cookie cutter reply, especially to your intro post, it is almost certainly a bot. Check the account's reputation. If it is low, I would recommend just ignoring them. Everything is public on Steemit, so you can go look at an account's comments and replies. Are they all the same? It's a bot.
Again, welcome, and I've followed you! If you have any questions about getting started, look me up on the chat site.
