I have missed college 😞

in introduceyourself β€’Β  7 years agoΒ

I have missed college. It's hard for me now, I'm extremely disappointed. My parents also feel ashamed when people ask about my college entrance exam. In Vietnam, people always think college is going to be successful, not going to college means ignorance and failure. That negative thought, weighing down on me, It hurts me every day. I have collapsed a few days, I do not understand why I am not college. Just because I'm too confident, subjective should have enrolled in high schools so I missed out on college. Those who are lesser than me are in a favorite university. Everyone brags that he is at college, and I'm disappointed. I am afraid of relatives, people around me, friends ask me questions related to college. I hate the education of Vietnam, it is too much to study. New college thinking can penetrate deeply into everyone, making the country of Vietnam difficult to develop. I now have to wait two months, to have the opportunity to apply to other schools.
However, it is not a good school.. I do not know how many days I have to live, but I have to go to college at all costs. 😒

Most of the famous people including Bill Gates is a college dropout. College is just a part of our education but talent is the thing that helps us in the long run.

HI, a-alice. I am sorry to hear about your college exam results. I teach in China, and the gaokao (college entrance exam) there is very difficult. I suppose Vietnam's is too.

But in China, students have to wait a year to sit the gaokao again. So, on the bright side, you have another chance in a few months. So, you can take this set-back as a challenge, and work hard to ace the exam next time. Not everyone has to follow the same schedule. One of my Chinese students was 23 when she was a freshman, because she had to work first to earn money to go to school.

I know you are sad now, but soon you will be happy. I'm a teacher, so if you need help, let me know.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Very good advise @wheatdogg

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I am very thankful for your advice. After listening to your advice, I feel luckier than the students in China. We have a second university admission exam, but only schools that lack students are eligible for admission. Fragile hope 😒 My parents said if I did not go to public university, I would have to go to private university. But private tuition fees are too expensive for me to follow.

How much are the fees?

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

5 million of Vietnam equals one month of my mother's salary. 😒 I can not go to private university. It will be a burden on my family. Calculates $ 250 a month, not including costs and additional school fees. 😒

You can generate income using Steemit. If there is a way to convert to Steem to Vietnamese dong, you could finance your education that way.

There is a website called kiva.org, which offers small loans to people in developing countries for schooling, business start-ups, and other things. The loans are crowdfunded, so many people contribute to the loan.

Are there scholarships available for low-income students there?

My advice is worry first about preparing for the exam, then worry about the money.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I think college level can not evaluate this person well, the other less. A few days ago I really suffered a lot, but heard the advice of you. I have had positive thoughts. Is China's university education burdensome?

From my American viewpoint, it's hard to get into a Chinese university, but easy to graduate. My students say the courses are too many and are often very boring, because the teachers do all the talking.

In the USA, the situation is different. It's easy to get into college/university, but the teachers expect students to study hard and be partners in their education. American students have fewer classes than Chinese students, but the requirements demand more individual work. So, it can be hard to graduate an American school.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I also heard people say that. So it looks like an American college degree is worth more than Vietnam. In Vietnam, it is difficult for people to go to college, so people's thoughts about college and not college are very different. 😟

Thank you all my good friends. I am very Surprised because I did not expect to receive much attention from everyone. At first I was just writing the heartbreak to release my heart, I was touched by the sincere advice of everyone. You make me feel more confident in the future. Actually, I do not care about having to go to college, just because my parents and others around me feel pressured and tired. I think the degree is not important, it is important how much money we get, whether we are happy or not? Once again I would like to thank all of you, everyone is so good and enthusiastic. Wish everyone success in life 🀝

You ought not to feel that all is lost. I live in America, from the South in particular. I work everyday with a lot of tradesmen, and sometimes with college graduates. I myself graduated college, but a college degree and a real education are NOT the same thing!

I know many college graduates who are utterly useless when it comes to solving practical daily problems. Many cannot manage their money or emotions very well. Educate yourself in the meantime in practical things. I am slowly teaching myself computer programming (Python). Learn a new language.

Look for learning opportunities everyday, and whatever you do--do NOT give up! The people that ultimately rise to the top are those that know how to think creatively under pressure, and accomplish meaningful things! You want to be the person who gets things done. A degree is a piece of paper that gets your foot in the door. An education is something (sometimes, not always found in college) that stays with you, and enriches your soul. Strive for an education, for wisdom, for a mature and humble heart.

I wish you the best, and may G-d bless you!

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Thank you so much. You are nice and kind. Your tips give me more motivation to strive for. I know that a university degree can still be unemployed, but in my country people still rank high above university. I wish you good luck in life! πŸ€—

Thank you @steemitblogs

Develop a trade, learn to do something you like. College is a good thing, but it is for the compliant ones, not for the free thinkers. Bill Gates dropped out of college- to create Microsoft- so that you would have the opportunity to use the internet and computers. In the USA, many companies prefer to hire older workers, without college educations, because they have the ability to solve problems without seeking guidance. They are resourceful. I know of many young people who have gone to college and graduated and now they are saddled with debt and deliver pizzas to pay off their debt. They have a college degree- but no cognitive thinking skills. Think of what you want to do in the world- and do it. Do what makes you happy and fulfils your existence. Stop crying and begin trying!

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Thanks for your useful tips. I will remember in my heart. In my society is different, the university is still many unemployed. However, people are very attentive to those who go to college, no one accepts those who do not have a college degree at work. Those who do not go to college, are only accepted but with hard work and little money. I think I have to have a different way of thinking to change people's thinking.πŸ€”

The reason that you are seeking a college education is for social acceptance, not to gain wisdom. There is a big difference between wisdom and knowledge. First you must have wisdom, in order to govern your knowledge. Giving someone knowledge, without the wisdom to govern it, is dangerous. It is like giving a young child a book of matches and placing him in the center of a field of tall dry grass. He has the knowledge to strike the matches, but lacks the wisdom not to- because it will lead to his death if he strikes the matches. You must find the problems in society and develop solutions for them- then you will be wealthy. The world needs people who can solve problems, not people who make excuses for failure. Be prepared to fail, many times. Every failure is a lesson. Success will come when you least expect it. Have you considered exporting or importing goods from Vietnam to other countries? NIKE shoes are made in Vietnam, and cost less than $1 US to make, but sell for $50 and more in the US. One thing you must learn to do is network- make friends who have skills that you do not and trade skill sets. You could approach NIKE shoe company, and tell them to install white LED lights inside the front of the shoe, that the wearer can turn on and off when needed and this will be an added feature for safely walking at night. Why has no one done this? Here is your opportunity. They have shoes with red and blue LEDs in the sides and the back- but no one has created a shoe with forward lighting for safety at night time. This will sell in every country.

Oh you really are a wise man. I am very thankful for your advice. Wish you always happy and develop your career. πŸ€—

  • Don't let this get you down @a-alice!! 2 months isn't that far away to be able to apply to other schools. Trust me! I have to take a whole year before I can go back to college. It definitely sucks, but it is not the end! Keep your head up and you will succeed. I don't know too much about schools in Vietnam, but anything that is worth it is worth the wait! Maybe this just wasn't your time right now and thats okay! I bet you will have a bright future coming (:

Tell me the series of days you have to wait success when coming to college. I want to hear you tell to pass. 😒

  • Well when I went for my Bachelor's it took me 4 years for that degree. But everyday I had to realize what I was doing and the opportunity that I had. It was definitely hard to see it back then, but it was SO worth it!! Now I am planning on getting my Master's and that will take 2 more years. It isn't easy, but if you maintain a steady path and keep your eye on the prize, then time won't matter.

Don't worry dear! I am sure, you'll get admission in good college after 2 months. Education is a must for every human being, but don't push yourself into stress and depression for it. And as it says - "This too shall pass away!"

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Thanks for your sincere advice. I have more confidence after hearing your words. Which country are you from? Does your place of residence impose a college entrance?

I am from India, and no, there are no imposition for entering into college. Although there are some entrance exams for getting admitted to some reputed colleges, but still there are so many options for the Indian students because many Universities have arose due to privatization. In India, getting admission into a college is not difficult, but getting jobs after completing your graduation is most daunting and difficult task.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Completely different from Vietnam. College entrance exam is very difficult, but graduation is quite easy. That is why Vietnamese masters is still unemployed. Many college graduates are still unemployed. However my country is still backward and conception: "New university is successful". Thank for sharing :D

Hi Alice. Even thou I am way past college and do not understand fully your culture, I feel you a little. I have girlfriend who is still in college. Problem is, she hates it and she knows it will not give her much. I showed her, how much she can do without a college. That college you hate is just waist of time. She gets it but... her family made her to promise that she will finish it. Fact that she has to finish it, interferes with our lives and delays our life plans, but as she says, it would break heart of her grandmother, if she quits now. So I get how family can make you feel bad when it comes to this subject. But she said, that if she knew me back when she was about to start, she would not start the college at all, at least not the one she hates.
In my opinion, if you really want to be doctor, lawyer or anything that requires college degree, go ahead and get it. But college just to be able to tell people that you have it, is waist of your life, and on this earth we have only one life. You cannot get back your time. It is your life, not your friends or families. So, although I know is hard, try to evaluate what is more important to you - your real dreams or dreams of your family and what they think about you. If you think college is something you don't want to do, start doing something you love and show everybody, that you can be more successful than those who have college. That you can be successful quicker than them, because you will not waist your years just to study things that are 90% unnecessary, drink and party. Instead, you can work on your REAL dreams, not dreams created by your family. I quit college after 2 years. And in life, I had my ups and downs, but in general was doing better than 90% of my friends who finished colleges and are working in jobs they hate, complaining about the boss. But that is all they know how to do, so they do it. There is so much stuff you can learn on your own now, with all the knowledge available, that college is the last thing people should really think about these days.
Hope these are not to hard words for you, but that is what many successful people think, and I agree with that.
Good luck to you, whatever you do.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I am extremely thankful for the advice from you! You make me feel more motivated. Actually, I did not enjoy college, but my family and everyone impose me on learning. Those who study in my country, when they graduated, still have to work for a boss. Although he just graduated And no university degree,. I have also advised my family very much that college is not everything. But perhaps the backward mind of the old was too deep in my family. There are those who are studying in college, and I know that college is so boring, it's really useless and graduates are still unemployed. The person who is learning is feeling want to quit, the person who is not learning again wants to learn. Actually, there are many people who are studying at university, but they are not able to finish due to pressure, tuition fees. I think I will have to struggle with my family for a long time. Your story gives me more confidence in life. Thank you very much ! πŸ€πŸ€—

You don't need to go to college to learn and you don't need a degree to make money.

University degrees seem to be worth less by the day. The world is changing and now anyone with a vision can become their own boss. Think about ways you can earn an income doing the things you like and make it happen.

For sure! Thank you. Ive written about this on my blog before and I will continue to write on this subject. If only people realized that this is what actually makes you free, more people would do it. Dear, if you have a chance to learn Chinese, I think, it's a better way out.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

I love Chinese movies. I'm also thinking of not going to college. I'm going to study Chinese. thanks for your advice. :D

I believe that it required to lot of courage to share this story and am sorry to hear that. What do you want to study?

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Thank you. I want to study a foreign language degree, but my parents say that degree is limited to 2 years. A university degree is forever. 😒 I do not dare to do what I want because my family, people around me, do not like people who have missed college.

There are various places to learn other languages on the internet. Would it not be better to be proficient in a language in real life than to have a piece of paper saying you are? That piece of paper will cost tens of thousands of dollars for what you can get online in the comfort of your own home! I wish you all the best!!!

That's true, one can't live without a foreign language. I'm sorry to hear all of that. On the other hand, I believe that college isn't a magic pill. You will learn that it doesn't matter that much what people around think of you. Doesn't matter what you do, you will not make everyone happy. But you will not make yourself happy and that's much more important.

I don't know much about the culture in Vietnam, but I believe that everyone should do things that make them happy at first. Once you succeed, the people around will also start appreciating you, even much more than if you we trying to make them happy.

I wish you all the best!

College is mental conditioning. I would never advise anyone to attend.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Thank you for the advice! But can you tell me why you do not recommend people to college? 😲

College is a scam. More people end up with life long debt from school loans than people that go on to be successful. The perctage of people with college degrees working ded end jobs is staggering to say the least. College is mental condioning, mental enslavement. Education is a beautiful thing but school is horrible. They teach you to conform to their ideas and crush free will and individual thought. You can educate yourself online these days for free, there are even colleges all over the world that are free now for anyone to attend. A college degree is close to worthless these day except for a few very specialized proffessions like becoming a doctor, almost anything else you can educate yourself for free and test out.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

In Vietnam the country is backward, so everyone thinks that there must be a university degree to apply for a job. I also want to like your country, grow rich and people are free to choose the industry they love. I do not like college, because I find that time a waste, a lot of money. But those around me they despise those who do not go to college

I understand. That same pressure is here but the newest generations are starting to wake up. You have to live life for you. do what makes you happy. Living to make others happy will only make you miserable. College is a huge waste of money. I wish you all the best and hope you find what makes you happy. :)

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

Do you feel happy in college? 😒

Sorry, my point was that I never went to college and did well. :) College is a business to make money (and lots of it)and I did not totally agree with it, so I did things the hard way but also did well. I believe more in apprenticeships personnally.

Β  Β· Β 7 years agoΒ

want to be like you. Rest assured, starting always difficult. After this we overcome the difficulties we have experienced, and the lesson to lead to success.

Seems like it is always difficult..haha. You just don't give up. Each thing you do will bring new opportunities...some good, some not so good. Keeping a smile in your heart no matter what others say helps make it easier.

Thank you :D

I have the same worries as you. Currently in my last year of school and scared I won't get good results to be able to go to an university I want. I wish you luck for the future I'm sure everything will go well!

I think all your hard work will get good results. I also tried my best, and the results of university entrance exams are quite high. But I am enrolled in a noble university, and that school has increased by 8 points compared to previous years. And I slipped. My friends are lower than me but they passed because they chose the average school. No matter how, in my own country, despite the high points of college failures are still worse than those of lower education but still college. In essence people matter more than results. I wish you good results in the exam, and listen to me! Do not ever subjective, do what sure!

@a-alice I have read your introduction post and many of the comments- I think it's a beautiful thing when we inspire others to believe in themselves, and to offer different perspectives. You are growing as a person and that is lovely! I am grateful to have come across your post, and look forward to reading more about your life in the future.

Hi there! Nice to meet you.. Welcome to steemit.. we're new too, if you want to check us out! I upvoted because I feel kinda the same as you about College. I've failed too.. and was so disappointed for months.. I felt like my parents were too.. but as soon as the time passes, I think that it's all happenning for a reason. Don't be sad. Your family, friends and others will support every path you choose to take because they love you. The only thing you need is true people around you and possitivity :) @a-alice
