Hello from Scotland

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

Hello Steemers! I am from Scotland and after many frustrating years of writing things for FaceBook I have seen the light and decided to produce my long winded essays for this austere platform.

I prefer to detail my ideas and thoughts in constructed essays, using the best English I can; hopefully for the amusement of others. I have a whimsical sense of humour, but make no mistake it is underlined by an educated and astute mind. I am post graduate educated in engineering, robotics being my theme of choice. I can speak with great authority on a diverse range of subjects, either through formal training or by experience.

However, I am very open minded and it is possible to change my mind on something, as long as you have a reasoned and articulate argument.

In my spare time I am a seasonal polymath, in the winter I cut down trees, split wood, code, drink whisky and generally think hard about things. In the spring I work on my boats, stack wood and start to do more outdoor stuff. In the summer, I sail, motorcycle, walk, go to music festivals and generally be a pain in the neck for people. Autumn (Fall for our American chums) is my least favourite season, boats are put away, motorcycling days are reduced and it feels like a withdrawal from the things I like, at least I get to sharpen my saws and start looking at trees that need felled.

I am an devout atheist - something that I am vocal about, on the basis that the alternative was forced on me as a child, so as an adult I can retaliate. I am happy to exchange views on these things and I am not easily offended, I have friends from many faiths who know me well enough not to try converting me!

I am LBGT friendly, anti-racist, anti-extremist politically and pro-disability rights. I have much experience in all these areas although I am straight, Caucasian and not disabled. The some of the people around me are not like me and I love that - we grow by experience and become strong through love & tolerance.

So, please feel free to say "Hi", I'd love to hear from you. I also like a challenge - give me a subject you would like me to write on and I will endeavour to throw a couple of thousand words at it, in my own unique idiom!

Welcome to Steemit @agrestic! I've resteemed your post in @knot for other sailors to see it and follow you. I like your intro a lot, and your world views are hell yeah!
Steem on! and if you are posting about sailing, use the hashtag #knot, and i will pop like a jinn and will resteem your post!

Thank you hugely! Next weekend I am about to replace the entire running rigging on my floating money black hole. I will endeavour to document my progress as I go, in my usual story telling manner. If you look at the very first post in my blog you will see the boat and my odd style of talking about it. I hope #knot finds it amusing.

We need storytelling in sailing! I will check your other post, and look forward for more!

Welcome! Gave you a follow!

Reciprocated, and thank you for the welcome!

Welcome to steemit :) If you have any question just click to Follow on my profile and ask :)

Where do babies come from?

For this type of question I have prepared special answer - From my favorite place. :-D

Beautiful answer! Well said my friend!

Thank you! If I rub people the wrong way, it is always done with warmth and humour, I always seek to start dialogue and never come to blows.

"In my spare time I am a seasonal polymath, in the winter I cut down trees, split wood, code, drink whisky and generally think hard about things. "

I feel like you are one of two things...

  1. Me, traveling back from the future.
...well, I don't have the education to back up that claim, so we will just go with...
  2. Someone I plan on following and pestering with every question I can come up with.

A topic I'd love to hear about is coding. I am in the process of trying to "teach myself" via Codecademy - currently on Python. Any advice for someone that is looking to develop those skills?

Thank you for the lovely comment, I appreciate that. Coding is both frustrating and rewarding in equal measure. I prefer to set myself a task then use code to solve it - sometimes I hit a brick wall, other times I sail through and achieve my aims. The only worthwhile advice I can give you is to remember that your brain is not always operating in the same way through the day. I find personally that I debug really well first thing in the morning (don't know why, I am not a morning person, but my brain is super analytical), during the evenings I blue-sky and create better, but usually get stuck. Sometimes, at least for me, sleeping on a problem often helps solve it.

Hi!! welcome to steemit. I'm also new here. hope we can follow and upvote each other..

I'll certainly follow you, but you could be a nutter :)

Welcome aboard! Write about why you are an atheist, and then what you think would constitute a healthy spiritual path if you (hypothetically) had to follow one.

Interesting question. Let me ask you this, would you ask a non-paedophile to imagine he was and then say which child he wanted? That’s pretty much what your question feels like to me. I will politely decline.

Well, that is an aggressive rephrasing of my question, but I could understand where you are coming from. I just heard recently that one of the better way to strengthen your perspective is to understand both sides of the argument and to be able to argue the other side better then the people who believe in it.

I understand your response, thanks for the reply.

I do apologise, I did not mean to sound aggresive, quite the opposite. The atheism is not an argument or open for debate, there is no god, it is lunacy to think otherwise and joyfully the burden of proof lies with the faithful. I do enjoy annoying the faithful because they have done it to me all my life and assumed my compliance. Peace and love!

Ah, that makes more sense. Thanks for the clarification.

Hey there, I'm Oatmeal Joey, and I'm part Scottish, part Dutch, was born in Oregon, above California. Yeah, I'm an American chum, haha, yeah. I'm into web design. Boats are cool. Maybe I will have one someday. Yeah, I like writing, too. Great photo here. Welcome.

Ahh Oregon, the heart of the US tree felling and logging world, a delight to hear from you!

True. We love our trees.

Welcome to steemit,Enjoy :)

I am immensely so far - feels like a liberation from FaceBook!

Hey welcome and greetings from germany!
You´re doing right... facebook is shit at all :) I wish you all the best for the future here!

Steem on my friend!
(if you want, join my contests... GIF#1 , GIF#2 and there will follow more of this)

Danke! I like your profile pics, I may just indeed take part in your contests!

Greetings and welcome to Steemit! It is a lot of fun and there are so many apps and things to do here so check out DTube, DLive, and DSound just to name a few. As well, check out my page sometime. I hang out around DTube a fair bit, but also enjoy some novice photography. Welcome aboard!

Can I have a quick overview of that the D things are? I've found it a bit confusing.

Sure be glad to give you a quick overview. DTube is like Youtube only on the blockchain system, DLive is a way to live broadcast, and DSound is for music folks interested in putting up music or podcasts, etc. Hope that is helpful.

The penny has dropped! It makes sense to bring that content in. I occasionally do birdsong recordings and FaveBook did not allow me to share it. Thanks Skip!

Anytime my friend. Glad it was helpful.
