One of four Aussie siblings with Albinism

Well where to start ? I'm an Australian living in Brisbane Queensland working for a global technology company with one major outstanding feature .. I have albinism and so does my three other siblings.

Now don't let misinformation lead you astray, nor popular culture like villains in movies - people with albinism aren't to be feared. We literally just lack pigment in our skin also known as melanin.

Because of this we also suffer severe sunburn when exposed to the sun for extended periods of time. Much quicker than those with darker skin. Our eyesight is also affected as the retina in those who have melanin protects the sensitive organ. However as we don't have any of this protection, sunlight glare can affect us greatly, as well as other eye related conditions which cant be fully corrected by eye-glasses.

An interesting fact about my family is that statistically speaking, only one in four siblings of parents who carry the recessive gene, which activates albinism, would actually have the condition. As you can see, all four of us have albinism. Even more rare is that I am a twin as well. I'm not aware of any other family on the planet with these statistics. I was going to contact the Guinness Book of records, but never really got round to it.

So why am I telling you this, well hopefully you gain a better understanding of the condition and the next time you see someone with albinism you will be better informed.
