My town Awkuzu

The origin of my town Awkuzu

#Awkuzu is a town in Anambra state under Oyi local government area, south east Nigeria. Awkuzu migrated from Nri which the ancestral home and origin of igbo land is. Nri started his generation multiplicity till a man called Nnamenyi was born.

Nnamenyi continued the process of procreation and had five children namely Ogbunike, Awkuzu, Umuleri, Nando and Onitsha. Awkuzu as one of the offspring of Nnamenyi grew up, got married to his beautiful wife called Iguedo and they started their own procreation.

The land of Awkuzu is one of the biggest towns in Oyi local government area of Anambra state. The town from the east has its boundaries with Njikoka, the North Nteje, the west Umunya and the South Ifitedunu. The Awkuzu town has three major villages namely: Ezi, Ifite and Ikenga.

Ezi is the largest. The three also have other small villages within them. Ezi being the largest of the three, the traditional throne of the town is being situated in the smallest village in Ezi called Iruayika in the family of Aganama.

At the demise of King Aganama the fourth, the throne was forcefully taken by the Late King John Nnebeolisa. The throne returned back to its original clan and family the Aganama family after the demise of King John Nnebeolisa.
The present paramount ruler of Awkuzu town is King Aganama the fifth, His Royal Highness Nweke Okafor with his cabinet chief selected from all the three main villages in Awkuzu town.

The customs and the traditions of the Awkuzu people is similar to the other ones in Igbo land. Awkuzu land with its rich fertile soil is known for its role in agriculture especially in the area of cassava, yam, maize and rice cultivation. Like any other town, the land is blessed with eminent personalities who has contributed to the state and the Nigerian nation at large. Examples include, His Grace, The Most Rev. Maxwell.C. Anikwenwa the retired Bishop of Awka, Arch Bishop Province on the Niger and the Dean Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion. Also, in the list are Late Bishop Oteh, Honorable Uchenna Okafor, Hon. Echesi the former commissioner for finance Anambra State, Hon. Nnacheta Tony the commissioner for sports Anambra State. etc.

The Civic Center is located at the heart of the town. The land also has primary and secondary schools and churches for worship. Awkuzu with its diverse cultural heritage attracts visitors with its three-major annual traditional festivals. They include Alomuo, Onwa Asato and Onwa Ato. The Awkuzu land like every other town in Igbo land have four market days namely; Eke, Orie, Afor and Nkwo.

With all these and more the Awkuzu people welcomes strangers very well hence it’s called the "Land of Smiles". When next you visit Nigeria, try and visit this promising land with the spirit of hospitality.
