Hello, My Name Is...Singer, Banker, Homesteader, What?!?steemCreated with Sketch.

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

Well, hello and welcome to my introduction.

It seems a bit awkward, since I've been a Steemian for just over a month now and I never really did properly introduce myself. However, I've been advised by several folks so far that this is important, so here I go.

I'm CrowbarMama, a homeschooling, homesteading mother of 4 who loves music and cooking nutrient dense food for my family. (Nourishing Traditions is a book everyone should have in their library.) We have some pretty complicated food restrictions so I often describe my time in the kitchen more as science experiments rather than regular baking.

As much as we loved our little homestead, a couple of years ago we decided to sell it and purchase a travel trailer as we hit the road in search of something that would better suit our needs. After nearly two years of living in a travel trailer, we are now in the final stages of building our home and focusing on the homestead again. It's been a long road, but we have enjoyed the experiences and lessons that come with building a home from the ground up. (This year, my personal goal is to become more knowledgeable and confident in gardening.)

We're a very eclectic family. We allow our children to explore their interests in an unschooling way, but we limit screentime in a Waldorf-ish way and the nerd in me still loves a good worksheet now and then, so I think we're pretty well rounded.

As for my background, I am a work in progress. I am the product of my many experiences and lessons (aka mistakes…lots of them!).

Aging doesn't scare me anymore, rather I am enjoying finally getting to be my true self.

I am the first-born of immigrant parents, who sacrificed to make a better life and provide better opportunity for their future children and grandchildren. As a child, I fell in love with music as it kept me afloat through times of turmoil and heartache. I fell into theatre quite by accident, but love it almost as much as music.

My daughter and I were cast as Mama Bear & Baby Bear in Shrek a few years ago.

In my late teens, most Fridays I could be found at the karaoke bar, where I was ‘discovered’ and asked to sing in a local rock band. This is a joke amongst friends since it was a small town and we never made it big so not much of a discovery, but great fun!

Eventually, I worked up from retail to banking, and shortly thereafter, promoted to managing my own office, while still fronting the rock band—those were fun times! Banker by day, rocker by night!

Banking wasn’t much fun when my focus had to be on profit and not customer service, but how could I just walk away from such a great position? Well, opportunity knocked, in the form of an armed takeover robbery. A terrifying ordeal, but looking back, I am so grateful as it gave me a way out of that life. Shortly thereafter, an opportunity to teach music and art to grade-school students appeared and I took a 70% paycut and was thrilled about it!

This is me playing songs for a co-op preschool class, with my toddler in tow, but my classroom music always started with a song on guitar as well.

I have always enjoyed helping, guiding and teaching others.

My younger brothers said I was bossy.

I said I had good management and communication skills.

I even went back to school to become a teacher. That is, until I realized I wanted to stay home at teach my own children.

My husband and I left our traditional suburban life for a homestead in the foothills 5 years ago and it was the best decision we ever made. We are by no means experts, but we now have experience with raising chickens, ducks, quail, hogs and milk goats.

We have basic butchering skills. We have now built 6 different types of bird coops without plans. We learned about fencing and predators.

We have dabbled in gardening, focusing on permaculture and hugekultur. We have successfully pressure canned and also fermented foods. (One of my recent posts was a tutorial for water kefir, the second ferment.)

We have learned off-grid ways to survive, that is to stay warm and have water and cook without power. We regularly practice firearm safety.

What I really enjoyed and miss most about our old homestead, was caring for my goats. I learned how to milk, castrate, disbud and trim hooves on goats.

The best part, is that our children have learned most of these things alongside us.

In many ways, the past five years have been the most grueling and exhausting of my life, but at the same time, the most rewarding. I'm glad I got to experience so much in my younger years, but this is where I am meant to be now.

There are so many mistakes that I no longer regret, but instead now hold dear. Those lessons were more valuable than any trophy or award I could have ever received. I believe strongly that we each make our own path and must do so at our own pace.

I am not here to argue or convince anyone of anything. I am here merely to share what my experiences have been, and in the off-chance that someone is experiencing something similar, they can know that they are not alone. I am not here to tell you what you should eat, how you should worship or where you should live.

I will share what has changed my life for the better. I will share the struggles I have overcome because it might give someone in a similar situation a glimmer of hope. I will share what I have learned about health and nutrition because I believe we as a modern society are sadly under-nourished despite all the abundance that exists around us. I will share the struggles I still face daily being a homesteading, homeschooling mother of 4, including a child who has complicated food sensitivities and is wise beyond her sensory-processing issues.

I do not regret my choices, as every one of them has led me to where I am today and that is right where I am meant to be. I now understand that what I focus on will become my reality. If I focus on regret, I will create more of it. If I focus on knowledge, then accordingly I will gain more of it.

I am a work in progress and I am proud to finally have the courage to stand in my perfect imperfection.

Wonderful to hear more about your background and so looking forward to following your continued journey through the ups and downs of homesteading, homeschooling and discovering the (I hope!) joys of gardening.

It sounds like you've had a wonderfully varied life, so you're all the better able to appreciate how well your current situation suits you, your values and your family. I definitely hold with the attitude of no regrets. Everything that happens to us helps to shape who we are, and as long as they don't become oppressive, difficult and challenging times can make us even stronger as people. You certainly sound like a strong person. I don't know where you find the time to post as much as you do with all your other commitments, but I'm only grateful that you do.

Best wishes and Steem on! :)

Thank you! I have certainly enjoyed your posts as well! I'm really wanting to go read the earlier chapters of your story, but as you mentioned where I find the time to post? Well, I've neglected commenting on my replies and that's not good either! It's all about balance, right? That being said, I'm doing my darndest to hop over and read more of your work tonight!

It is nice to officially meet you. It sounds like your family has been in quite the adventure these last 5 years. What a great life story. Thank you for sharing. Looking forward to many more great post to come

Thanks for the comment! It has been a crazy 5 years, but we're really enjoying settling in now. I just read your post about your bird boxes. Do you guys have an issue with mosquitoes? And did you see any difference with the birds in that regard? I mean less flies is definitely worth it, but less mosquitoes would be a huge bonus! I want to get bat boxes going since I know they eat tons of mosquitoes. I read that a single bat will take down 1000+ mosquitoes a night! Plus it's just cool to see them swooping around when we do a campfire. Anyway, looking forward to reading more of your posts as well! I love that you were able to avoid some vaccines for your herd. Way to think outside the box!

Yes the birds do help with mosquitoes as well. We do not have a ton here to begin with but it is a very rare thing to be bitten by one here on our farm

Nice to get to know a bit more about you! Our families share a lot of goals, plans and desires. We are just a few years behind you.

From the look of your posts, I wouldn't say you're behind us at all! I wish we lived closer. Always nice to chat with fellow red-pill free thinkers.

I partially meant behind you because our twins are only 8 months! Haven't quite started the home schooling yet. ;)

They do like to be read books already though. They also like to chew on them...

Ah... yes. Mine are 11, 8, 5 & 2. The oldest was reading at 3. She was a complete book nut! Turning pages in a magazine at 8 months old and never ripped a page! My next two, well, they made up for it in being less than gentle with their books. 🤣 Although they do love being read to, they're into math more than reading, so we're just going with the flow. The two year old is starting to repeat each page that is read to him just like my oldest did, so it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

We did find a baby book that is a washable non-toxic tear-proof paper so the kids can chew on them, crumple them and you can totally wash them. Have you seen them?

I haven't seen them. We have some that are made of cloth. For some reason they like the paper ones more though!

We had a few fabric books and the kids didn't care for them either. I think they liked the feel and sound of paper. The crinkliness... Anyway, here are the Indestructible books, although I wouldn't buy them at this price. I know I've seen them in store for as little as $2- on sale. They're very slim and lightweight so they don't take up much space.
Indestructible Books

Thank You, I will have a look and share with Aimee.

great getting to know you a little bit better, you sure have had a very interesting life, rocker, banker, nomad.I'm really happy to have connected with you on here already and looking forward to some more great posts xx

Thank you! I'm really enjoying all the wonderful folks I'm meeting here! My interests are so eclectic that I don't often find people in person that I truly connect with. Not that I'm complaining, I'm all about quality over quantity, but it's encouraging the amount of real and awake individuals I've encountered here. And your post the other day about feeling overwhelmed just touched me. I think all individuals have responsibilities that weigh heavier some days than others, but mothers often even moreso. Here's to some light and happy days!

thank you @crowbarmama, yeah here's to many light and happy days for us both, I do love your approach to life, living by example for me is the most important, we reach little if we preach, for me I would like for people to come together more and not feel driven away because of comparisons being made. We are all so unique and talented in our own way, I am all about diversity.

Ah this was great! So happy you wrote your intro post cuz now I know so much more about you :) rock on healthy mama! <3

Thank you! Is it weird that I feel like I really know you? Past life maybe? In any case, if you're ever on a road trip the kefir offer is always there!

<3 Love that! and thank you. You're so warm!

Welcome and I have enjoyed your posts so far. Following you

Thanks! I love that you're sending some Canadian love to the Homesteadersonline folks! So kind of you!

Sounds like you have similar principles to me but have really taken it to it's full conclusion!

I am a musician but also a complete nerd when it comes to nutrition!

I've tried it all - paleo, very low carb and even tried raising mealworms as a protein source!!
The experimentation and self education has been so worth it. I am 50 now but feel the best I have ever felt in my whole life. I also find getting nutrition right has made me more creative. I have a lot more energy!

So I am now following you and looking forward to hearing more!

Oh no, no conclusion here, a never-ending lesson! Haha! Mealworms for protein? You are slightly more hard-core than I. Although I did consider cricket flour for baking, until my kids overheard me and freaked out that they would not eat anything I baked for fear I was sneaking it in. Hehe-always keeping them on their toes, right?

As for nutrition helping with creativity? Abso-freakin-lutely! I know it helps with my mindset, and a clear mind is just begging to create, so yeah!

Btw, enjoyed your "Negativity Zone". I'll have to learn how to post audio and upload some of my old band's originals. Just for fun. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks for the feedback on my music. I have nearly uploaded my 3 albums and will start on all my singles next. They are all very different than that one. :-)

Good, organic (and when possible bio-dynamic) protein really does make a huge difference!

I think because, for example, every chicken looks the same people think that the cheaper ones are fine. The fact the what the animal eats affects it's own health and therefore the nutritional content of the meat is hardly ever discussed.

It's a pretty sad world when companies can create "fake food" using chemicals to trick our brains too. I'm actually writing a song about that at the moment and one of the lines is: "the are selling us slow murder"!

Very Nice
Permaculture is the way to go.

Yes, permaculture is such a beautiful thing and so diverse! I am very eager to see what this year brings! Thank you for commenting.

Welcome to Steemit! Enjoy the ride as much as you can!

hey ... welcome to the steemit ...hope u can do better in that community and will be able to add more value ... lets work together

Hello, CrowbarMama! You seem a very interesting personality. You've been traveling for nearly 2 years, wow! What is your most memorable moment from traveling? Best of luck and hope we connect :)

I am into healthy lifestyle, motivation and more in case you would like to visit my channel :) VALUE guaranteed

Hello! We actually travelled for 4 months, then purchased a property, but still lived in the trailer as there was no house built yet. My most memorable moment was the first week in the trailer before we started out travels. One child was sick and vomiting, one got poison oak, my grandmother died and we found out I was pregnant. We can laugh at it now, but it certainly tested our resolve at the time. Thank you for your kind comment.

Thank you @blondeabroad. Thanks for the tips for selfies. Admittedly, I used to laugh at our nieces and nephews carrying their selfie sticks around, but now that I have 4 kids and we rarely get pictures with all of us in them anymore, I think a selfie stick is going to be a good investment for us!

Happy to "meet" you.

What a great journey story.

We have many things in common. It is going to be wonderful to learn more about them from your perspectives.

Ah... Thank you! We certainly do have much in common! Although you're a much better photographer than I am. Maybe I'll learn a few things following you! And looking forward to seeing the fruits of your Freestyle GArden!

I glanced at your intro post the other day, but actually took time to read it today. Very well done, by the way. You're going to be a Steem Star if you keep this up!

Lots of good lines, too many to pick a favorite. I also experienced a gun point robbery of my workplace, it will make you think. Immigrant parents, may I as where from?

I really enjoyed how you wrote this paragraph "I am not here to argue or convince anyone of anything. I am here merely to share what my experiences have been, and in the off-chance that someone is experiencing something similar, they can know that they are not alone. I am not here to tell you what you should eat, how you should worship or where you should live."

It will be fun to watch your progress to stardom on here!
