I'm torn

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago  (edited)

I've read much advice about how to build a following here. I expect I'm no different from the rest in that respect. Now I do want to say that it isn't all about making money here. I really do like the platform as a way to interact with people from all around the world. Various interests and perspectives are part of what makes the world as diversified as it is.

One thing I did read was to upvote, upvote, upvote. It was suggested that it was beneficial to even upvote your own posts and replies. That's what I'm all tore up about. Seems a bit...self serving...and I'm not certain if others feel the same way and because they see me having upvoted my own...even though I've upvoted theirs...that they make a subconscious, perhaps conscious decision to just not upvote for me.

I just joined yesterday and I believe I'm doing the things that lead to success here. Of course success is important...not critical mind you, and I know it takes time to build something worthy of a stranger's attention. It's just...well how do you feel about someone who upvotes all posts and answers that they like...even their own. It's not like I have a compulsion to upvote every single post I come across...that's just a tad much!

I don't ask anyone to follow me...if they find my stuff interesting then that's great...but I do follow those who have posted something that caught my interest and I've upvoted...I rarely upvote without leaving a comment.

Am I doing this right fellow Steemians? Your feedback at this juncture would be greatly appreciated. Lol...and no...I'm not as torn as James Dean here in the movie Rebel Without A Cause...but all us struggling creative types get the drift. Actually a great movie...won a best actor Oscar posthumously I believe.

Thank you for the kind words...and welcome to steemit yourself @achilleas :-)

Would you believe I've never watched any of the movies? I argued as a child that birds looked like dinosaurs to me. I was big on dinosaurs back then. Archaeology was one of my interests.

So I guess what you're trying to tell me is to stay small and out of sight? Put on some weight...fill out my plumage? ;-)

"HA HA" I am just saying WELCOME BRO! IT IS A JUNGLE OUT THERE tho ;)

oic...haha...thanks for the welcome...bit of a jungle in here as well. ;-)

First of all welcome to steemit, I am personally here only for a few days so I don't really know how to answer all of your questions.
I upvote and follow people that share the same interests as I do and posts that I find interesting.
Works fine for me atm...

It looks like you're doing fine too. I'll have to start sharing more of my interests here in my posts. Thanks for the welcome and the feedback. btw @nativzel I have a friend who is going back home to his wife and family in El Salvador. He's been working here in Canada and sending money back home for years now.

I'm a bit new as well, about 2 weeks. I don't normally upvote my own posts, but I certainly don't fault anyone who does. Why not? I don't think there is any harm. I think I just feel I'm too new for it to make a difference. I have had a fair amount of success just interacting with folks here, though. It is a very active and welcoming community.

I'm not sure it makes a difference either @candidfolly but then I'm not likely to ever know. It's not like it takes any more time than upvoting others. I expect when I downvote someone...when it happens it'll be as easy to do as to upvote another. Likely I'd flag the post as well...it would have to be that egregious. Thanks for sharing your point of view. Best of luck to you.

Typically from what I notice those with enough SP for a payout upon voting will upvote their own comments as well as those who are part of a long comment chain. Upvoting your own main posts is the norm.

Now there's a meaty answer I can really sink my teeth into. :-) Thanks @guiltyparties ...lol just had to correct from guiltyparted...must be that gap toothed smile yer sport'n ;-p

Hi, and welcome!

Here's a short and simple reference guide I put together for new Steemit users especially. It's covers the most basic elements of Steemit that everyone here needs to know about, which are steem, steem dollars, steem power, voting power, followers, vests and witnesses. It also includes links to some very helpful external sites. This is part of it:

And on steem, steem power and steem dollars:

Also:

I hope Steemit works out very well for you!

Well you don't get if you don't ask. This should serve me well @doule You don't mind if I forward/post it from time to time when another Steemian is seeking answers upon settling in here...do ya?

And thanks for the welcome!

You're welcome. And I don't mind, but make sure to properly attribute it by posting a link to the article. There's also an updated version with many more links. This way I'm getting credit for putting the page together, and no one will think you're taken credit that's not yours.

you be fine here in know time u be having lots of followers

Thanks @tinashe ...I'm gonna hold you to your word on that ;p So do you upvote your own posts?

yes i do dat

That's the feedback I'm looking for @tinashe ...thanks for getting back to me on that...much appreciated.

you are welcome .

Honestly, still a bit confused about some of these things, but apparently the value of your upvote goes down if you do it too much? Like more than 20x a day or something. Still figuring it out myself..

The upvoting yourself is a strange thing. Trying to figure out the ethics of the whole thing as well.

Anyway: confusion and all, it's the best here. Welcome! Xx, Kay (a singer-songwriter trying to figure how to use the platform well as well)

Well there's something that puts a bit of a twist in my thinking. I certainly don't want to lessen the value of my attention to other's work. Perhaps @doule will have something about that in his helpful reference guide he posted here. Maybe it'll have some useful info for you too @kayclarity

My apologies for the tardy reply...seems the page needs to reload before new posts appear...and yes confusion takes up a good part of my time here...learning the proper etiquette for Steemit will go a long way to giving me more "production time"

Thanks for the feedback and nothing but the best for you. Looking forward to less hectic times to come see/listen to your particular groove.

~may all hatred cease...let there be peace~

I'd love to hear from @doule if they know a bit more. Thanks! I hope you can :)

Hi @kayclarity ...I'm currently reading your post/blog and the responders about spammers and such and really haven't had a chance to look at what's there...now I'm just a bit paranoid about outside links...links in here too? I just don't know what I've gotten myself into.

@doule posted here...it seems he's perhaps guilty of spamming as well...idk...I see the same post from him now a lot...kinda like you notice a the car you just bought driven by others everywhere you go.

I've really got to sort my thoughts out about the risks I'm taking to my security here. I sort of thought Steemit would have that all covered. Just don't understand why they allow it...must be some kind of law I guess.

Excuse my babble here...I think I'm where you were when first arriving...the flight or fight instinct kicks in...good to see you fighting...I'm still in the deer in the headlight stage...atm

You can actually go and check their comment stream to verify. Similar comments are a little inevitable (just like when you meet people in real life), but if it's literally a copy & pasted message over and over.. THAT is problematic spam.

Spamming here, so far, doesn't seem to be an external links issue so much as just new users trying to get a huge following fast using debatably unethical means. That make sense?

Don't let them ruin it for you! Maybe just don't worry about them for now.. just try to enjoy :) Most people here are honestly phenomenal. Some feel like friends already. xx

yer a peach...thanks for taking the time...and yes it makes sense

don't understand why they don't have an algo that spots the obvious stuff here...still it's not like it's much ado about nothing...will look more into the sweepers...but really not the vigilante type

Must keep a tidy place...company's coming...by the droves and we want to make them feel at home ;-)

Sounds good :). Enjoy! And.. I'm in Canada as well! Cheers!

lol...no wonder you make so much sense to me...jk...don't want to be accused of being region-centric ;p

You have fun too oxo

not a fan of cookie cutter responses...not going to downvote you...but not going to upvote you either. Did you even read it? ...just telling it like I feel it!

~may all hatred cease...let there be peace~

Just my way of saying hello. Trust your fre will and I'll trust mine! Take care and good luck

Fair enough, and yes I understand now. Thanks for following up @lengle2811 I appreciate that.

thanks, actually I'm having a great time...beats staring at price charts on the exchange for hours on end...needed a break from that

my apologies for the delay in response...glitch in the matrix has decided I didn't need to be alerted to replies anymore...maybe the steembot's think me psychic

I'm not entirely sure but I think you automatically upvote yourself when you post.

I started out not knowing about voting, I'm still not entirely sure about any kind of strategy, but at a certain point, I got frustrated when i wasn't getting any upvotes and started upvoting all of my stuff.

Now I take it on a case by case basis. If I feel I've been especially witty or helpful, I'll upvote a comment to push it higher so it might get noticed.

And, sometimes I'll just let it settle where it may.

interesting tactic you got there...you steal it offa me...lol...jk...but really...all these posts from the past couple days never got to my feed...or I was just too tired to notice

currently I'm refraining from upvoting anything for a couple days...supposed to be good for...ummm I forget just what but I'm convinced enough to see if it makes a difference...lol...how I'll ascertain that I haven't quite figured out yet.

Thanks for commenting...I hope you get the alert in your feed...peace out...in ;-)

and ...NO...I am not digging up yer nuts and moving them on you...but for 5 SBD...I'll give you a hint who is :P

I'm not worried about nuts.

It's another one of those things I can't control.

I'm on a self-imposed voting cooldown too, I was below 30%.

I think the only way to avoid it is for me to just stay off for a while.

Far too many good things to not vote up.

Well the feed seems to be working fine again...and nuts...who ever heard of a squirl who wasn't worried about losing their nuts. ;-)

I'm making notes...but they're mental ones...lol...probably go squirrely trying to find them again in a couple days...but that's another great thing about the feed...I'll know where I've been by looking at the comments I've made these couple days.

I'm so glad to be able to go back through my comments, it's like my trail if breadcrumbs.

I just joined yesterday so not able to respond to your "am I doing it right" question (as I've no idea what I'm doing yet!) but it sounds like you're doing it in a way that's genuine and authentic to you? Interesting read. Following you. Oh, and James Dean 👌🏽

Hello...I just love your name...kinda Holly Golightly...esque. Welcome to Steemit...so sorry about the delay in my reply...see responses just above as to possible excuses...two's plenty...three's pure b.s. ;-)

I'm sure by now you've managed to spread those wings and catch some air...I'll come by and see what you're up to. Thanks for the kind words...and the verbal upvote for my favorite rebel.

~may all hatred cease...let there be peace~

Ahh, never thought of the name being Holly Golightly-esq but I do love Breakfast at Tiffanys! I love all old films! Just seen your reply now. Think my replies section was playing up :)

yes I love the old B&W movies too...just read on Steemit they've got an AI that can colourize movies tout suite...not my thing but if it gets more people watching and falling in love with them and the actors...then I'm all for it!

~smiles fer miles~~

Ooh interesting. Clever technology hey! :)

Yes technology can be pretty clever...too clever sometimes. ; - )

Still...some things are better the old way...like whistling, sex...and vinyl...just to name a few.

~smiles~ talk'n music here...git'cher mind outta the gutter there grrrl. :P

Hello and welcome to the community!

My advice is post quality. The best writing is when you are scared $hitless to hit the publish button :) Check out my 100 Followers post I made a couple days ago ;) Quality will trump quantity EVERY TIME. And only follow who you are interested in - either them as a person or their articles. From what I read you are doing well!

again...my apologies for the lateness reply...really don't know what happened...I've been around for most of the week since I've joined...other than taking care of a few things in RL and the little bit of sleep I've managed.

I do recognize your name...perhaps Discord...idk...you tell me. I'm likely to have seen your posts but notice I hadn't followed you...so now that I have...I'll come see just how you've come to dominate the world. Are you a gamer by chance...I'm not.

I'm genuine and just posted today expecting to hit 100 in my first week. It's messy...but it is me...some like it like that...and I'm never afraid to push the button...each to their own...yes/no?
~smiles fer miles~

I am not a gamer. However I am in the beginning stages of building a game app. Yea, no coding skillz or nuthin, lol (what have I gotten myself into?) :)

Of course to each his own, if we were all alike the world would be an awefully boring place ;)

yeah...learning curves can be rough sometimes...you'll find help here I'm sure
