I've never been great at the first "hello" to any surprise encounter or beginnings of relationships in general. What am I supposed to say? I could stick with the common ground rules of small talk, so does that mean I state my name and age? I mean, let's be real, who really wants to know that my name is Emma and I am a 17 year old.
Mentioning all my darkest, deepest secrets right off the bat would most definitely not classify as the glorious conversation tool we call small talk. Perhaps bringing up my love for writing and art could take up the whole time until we part ways? Or would that be too cliche? Maybe I could talk about how the weather is nice here in Oklahoma. A little too hot for my liking, but nice nonetheless.
Small talk can be helpful for a shy and slightly anxious person like myself and you can learn a lot about a person by what they consider to be small talk. However, given the choice, I'd much prefer to get to know a person through heart to heart conversations. I could mention religion and if they believe there is life after death, politics and get their own personal opinions on what the actual hell is going on, or I could even share my thoughts on the whole debate on whether pineapple should REALLY belong on pizza. However, those are all very serious topics that should probably not be brought up in the very first conversation.
But I guess I'll just never be very great at small talk.
