Me, Myself and An Ethical World of Mine

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

Hi, I’m Sandia.

Less than a year ago I didn’t own a phone. Hadn’t had one since I quit my corporate job over 5 years ago to be a full time mama. At the time I didn’t think I needed one. We were living in an idyllic beach town in New Zealand, running a restaurant 5 minutes away from home. There’s nothing quite like opening your front door to the beach every day. Our lives revolved mostly around a 5km radius, and we came to fully embrace the simple life.

Then early 2017 we made the big move back home, to Malaysia. Straight to the fast-paced life of the concrete jungle.
This mama now has two choices – to resume my corporate career or to carve out a new path for myself. To leave the upbringing of my two boys in the hands of a caretaker or to care for them myself. To join the throngs of masses in the 9 to 5 rat race or to work for myself when and where I want to.
Hands down I choose the latter.
I choose to embrace slow living in the city.
I choose...

This year I got myself a phone. Not because I succumbed to the pressures of social media, but rather to push myself out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to do things I have not done before. Like writing. About an ideal place in my vision which I'd like to call an ethical world of mine. About a realm of complete connectedness between ourselves and our planet, where we eat good food and consume mindfully.

Why? Well, there is so much that we have been conditioned to do without thinking twice as if on autopilot, driven by a mass consumerist culture that seems to be taking over the world, causing unbelievable and possibly irreversible damage to our planet and people. Most of all because we need to find alternatives to the things quite often seen as predictable and ‘normal’, which in reality are causing more harm than good. Little changes do add up and there is no better time to start making these changes than right now.

For now I am simply grateful to have been introduced to Steemit, seems like a great platform for sharing and collaborating with other free-rangers and non-mainstreamers. I’m super stoked to be part of this community and I wish you all a great start to 2018!

And finally, the customary selfie....

Hi @ethicalworld, welcome to Steemit!

Just wow! I read it couple of times, and I agree with you on so many levels. Most of the time, we don't even take time to think before we act. We don't have time - We don't have to question anything anymore. Really enjoyed reading your post, and definitely following for more original content. I'm new as well, so good luck as a steemian :)

Welcome to Steemit! New here myself, compelling story, look forwRd to more!

Sorry you aren't still in New Zealand.... is that position still available? Maybe I can talk my husband to moving to New Zealand. He does like beaches!!!!
