The other one failed. I'm thinking that one really can't earn much on Steemit from curation only, starting from scratch :P
In short, I followed whales (you know the drill...),
...Upvoted early and like crazy AND commented/curated for sometimes hours per day (whales AND new folks from introduce yourself...) without buying any more Steem than this site graciously gives for free when signing up (maybe 5 back then...),
...and I earned Shizzle.
Well, I shouldn't say that the first experiment failed...
I learned something. I just didn't earn a bunch of Steem by upvoting, and curating, only. And at least what I did earn has risen in value since 2016.
If 5 Steem is what was given when I opened the account, then it's safe to say that I earned about 8 1/2 STEEM POWER from about 5 or 6 weeks weeks of active upvoting and curation.
I'm not complaining. As we all know, that's more than Facebook ever gave us :)
(comedy, not an actual photo. SORRY, I forget the source, I copied it awhile back onto my computer.)
Okay so I'm powering down the little I have, and will be running experiments and publishing the results of using the Upvote Bots (i.e., those things you pay to upvote your post, on the promise that they will return you a bit more ).
I've gotten decent results from trying them on another page of mine, so let's try it here.
First, let's see what I earn naturally from the upvotes on this, my first real post (if I earn anything that is... 563 followers on an account that hasn't done anything for almost 2 years - good luck with that!!) ...
And then I'll start a new experiment, recording the results from whatever upvote bots I can afford. Currently, I have only 0.036 Steem that's actually transferable, so like I said, I'm powering down.
The first bot that I'll try (maybe on this post, after it's natural votes have accrued) will be
@resteem.bot
which only asks for 0.2 Steem (so just 0.164 to go, woot woot!)
ARE YOU EXCITED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS??
Well, we can all wait til next week (when I get ONE (1) new transferable Steem from my Power Down, to pay an upvote bot) to see what happens, or feel free to send me a little Steem to help start the new ...
... improved ...?
... experiment.
You can even specify if you want me to transfer any "donations" back to you after using the bot(s). @experiment is not a non-profit organization or anything, just trying something out.
Here's the list of the bots I've gathered, and what their minimum transfer is to get them to upvote. INCLUSION BELOW IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT! THIS IS AN EXPERIMENT!! USE THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK. But I have "experimented" with many of them on my other page, and I don't think any of then have ripped me off. But buyer beware, y'know?
When I have enough Steem in this account to transfer to more of these bots, I'll come up with something to post (maybe simply using https://www.parley.io/ , maybe some original content) and together we'll learn how they do.
Note : as I said I'm not a non-profit org... I will be keeping most of the proceeds from whatever happens to fund my retirement or whatever. In this case, we learn together, but we don't earn together, haha.
Feel free to follow, and I'll try to edit this and future posts and/or comment on the results from each bot, after they upvote. If you have used them, feel free to comment with your results and opinions.

Okay with 13 votes and $0.31 earned so far (0.09SBD, 0.04 STEEM, 0.09SP) , @resteem.bot has just received 0.2 Steem ($0.328 USD, STEEM at $1.64) and I'm at 716 followers ... Results will be edited into this reply.
EDIT : resteem.bot maybe takes Sundays off? 17 hours later it resteemed me, and my USD went up 3cents from its upvote ( = less than 10% of what I paid) with no additional votes :(
And upvoted his own comment here for another 3 cents to him.

On weekends when there is a lot of traffic it takes some time. We have set ourselves limits not to spam our followers
We are not a upvote bot but provide for visibility. Upvotes are based on the content of the users.
Yes, we sometimes vote for ourselves, we have invested a lot of private money and time in Steemit every day. You also votest yourself with your main account, why do you criticize it with us?
And we even give the profits to our community. #winwithresteembot

Thanks for the clarification on weekends, having limits probably a good policy to not spam your followers. I used you on my other account last week with I think good results, but I used several at once so it was hard to tell, hence the experimental approach of wanting to try them one by one, wait for results, then use the next service.
However I think most people want to upvote early, so resteeming 17 hours later wasn't helpful in this instance, AND I should have submitted closer to the actual time of my post for best results.
Self upvotes are pretty normal - in this case I did it to get the comment raised above the steemplusbot comment - but with the 17 hour delay (and contacting you after 10 hours with no reply) it just seemed a bit insulting.

Unfortunately, I encountered the same thing when I first started using Steemit. All these vying-for-attention social media sites are designed to do the same thing, that is to steal attention away from your real life and provide artificially manipulated dopamine releases that suck away your time, thoughts, and energy. Oh, and don't forget the false hope of getting paid for the work that you put in...
