Time for something new

in introduceyourself •  8 years ago

Once upon a time an illustrator found out about a little secret. Legend had it there was a place where artistic creativity was not only welcomed but revered – a place where it would be appreciated and seen. She wasn’t quite sure how it all worked, but intrigued, she dipped her toe into the water. It wasn’t as cold as she thought it would be, and soon found herself diving right in, showing her creations and revealing parts of herself in ways she never thought possible. But something was amiss. Her name. This unprecedented desire to spread her message while realizing she was also inspiring others to do the same would require something more memorable – a name that hinted at all the good things she hoped to bring to this magical land of steem.

Greetings again to my steemit friends, old and new. It has been suggested that my username @jlwkolb is not catchy enough for what I hope to bring here. So allow me this chance to reintroduce myself with a name more fitting to both me and the work I do.

I have been very lucky here so far with all the encouraging support I’ve received for my posts. I’ve made new friends that I would never have met otherwise. I had no idea this would happen. I saw it as an incentive to finally get my work out there while holding myself accountable for following through with my plans. Promoting what I do has always been a challenge – that whole modesty handicap, but my courage has been restored, my self-consciousness conquered (for the most part), and my desire to share my thought process with my illustrations has been rewarded beyond my wildest dreams. Financial success wasn’t my motive. I won’t deny that the thought of being compensated for my years of experience in the art world was appealing. But it wasn’t the driving force. For me it was being seen and making a difference for others, and that sure has been happening. And I am honored to say that steemit is the first social media platform I have ever used to post my work in a blog format.

It never occurred to me that people would want to know how a children’s book comes to be. You can buy it in the stores complete with words and pictures – what else is there?

I underestimated the interest of going deeper beyond the finished work. I guess you guys all really liked behind the scenes glimpses into the world of an illustrator, seeing the inner workings of my art making processes warts and all. You were intrigued by my earliest thumbnail sketches and versions that never made it to publication. Unbelievable. And that response inspired me to create more so I can share more. It’s like a symbiotic relationship – your enthusiasm keeps me producing. @fairytalelife is far more descriptive of the stories I want to bring here.

Having this new name will put me more into my role as a storyteller. I hope you humor me as I make this dynamic shift; my creative muses have been in overdrive lately just as yours have. Hopefully my new posts as @fairytalelife and those under @jlwkolb will continue to spark an appreciation for the value of arts in our culture.

I look forward to putting up many more projects in progress as well as sharing some pretty extraordinary travel adventures.

In addition, I am eagerly looking forward to some highly respected creators I predict will be joining us here soon.

Until then, keep on writing and sharing. But also be kind and remain approachable. We can all help each other out to become social media's largest community of online mentors if we work together to make and keep steemit a place like no other. That’s a good thing, isn’t it?

Full Steem ahead!

Thank you, @fallcreek. I hope so

I love your illustrations and im not saying that just to get paid. You are really talented both in writing and in your llustrations. Cheers and welcome back.

Thank you, @paco. I do appreciate that very much

I always wondered why they called them "Fairy Tales" I think it comes from fairy tails. Like a legend or something hard to prove existed.

@trevonjb, they are called fairy tales from the French contes des fees - literal translation - tales of the fairies. This was done around the time the famous French fairy tales were told, like those of Charles Perrault (Cinderella) and Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, the author of Beauty and the Beast. The English translation stuck, so they were also used for the collection by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, among others. The stories Disney has recreated are nothing like the fantastically dark original folktales. I will be talking more about these in future posts. But you are right; they stem from oral folklore told throughout centuries - legends, as you said.

I love your work, and your philosophy. Great to meet you @fairytalelife :D
I particulary like the map. It brings back memories of the books I read as a child. I look forward to seeing, and reading, more of your work.

Thank you so much, @handsolo. I'm glad - maps are so much fun. They remind me of my childhood books too

Your art is beautiful!

Thank you, @gapil

Nice)

Wow i love your style! the colours use are magnificient. I cant pinpoint the style at this moment but i thinl thats because i just woke up. Any way your style is so incredibly fitting for fairy tales, you use the dark blues and greens and it just makes the image feel surreal and dreamy. really great stuff!

Thanks so much, @warrensteem - so kind of you. I'm glad you like my work

nice post

Every illustration that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the copywriter

Sometimes they are one and the same, @konti

Wow. . . those drawings are amazing. . . keep them coming!

@grolelo, thanks! I'm working on it

You have better illustrations than I had in my post about Area 51 and Steemit.

Wow @fairytalelife - you just blew my mind!

Yes, your art is stunning and certainly worthy of being shared so we may witness your gift... but what really knocked my socks off is how you are thinking of using THIS platform to do so! I love this idea, it has sparked something that might just get me writing on Steemit again. THANKS!
Be well.

Thank you so much, @bee-tollworthy. Steemit can be a great platform for all artists and writers. Please do keep writing. The more we work, the better we get.

wellcome

I am also new to this and I am learning a lot from your comments. Your illustrations are beautiful!

Thank you, @hallie123 - I appreciate your kind words.

I'm reading a lot of kids books at the moment and illustrations are amongst the best I've seen! Very nice

Wow, @azurejasper - thank you. That's quite a compliment!

You write so beautiful, im really inspired by your talent. Please keep going with your writing it is enchanting!

I never really took value in children books but my family always read them while we where younger. It was always a tradition in our house but after that died down I never again thought about it until now!

I really look forward to your works.

1 UP vote is not enough of your talent!

Thank you

Thank you, @thedailyhobbyist. Such sweet things you said! I'm happy you grew up with books. Nothing can inspire a child's imagination more than being read to while very young.

Interesting. Didn't know

Love the illustrations.

Beautiful illustrations! :)

Congratulations with new personality! Pictures are great! Thanks
