This post takes a look at the goalkeeping dilemma that is likely going to face Mourinho at United this upcoming season.
Morinho is a type of manager who does not underestimate the prowess of a good second choice goalkeeper. Few deputies have made their marks under Jose mourinho like Sergio Romero. After just a few minutes action in pre-season, the 30 year old went on to start 18 games under the Portuguese last season.
It could be recalled that it was Louis Van Gaal who brought Romero to Manchester united after the duo had a good time together at AZ Alkmaar FC in the Eredivisie but the Dutch didn’t give him much playing opportunity under him.
In contrast, Romero has been one of the good united players to have improved greatly under Mourinho and he only missed three (3) games in United’s 15-game march to Europa league glory last season. Having worked with good second choice goalkeepers, Mourinho has been blown away by the good atmosphere at United.
De Gea and Romero have remained friends despite their rivalry to become No1
While De gea, who has been the Fan’s best player for some seasons now before he was overtaken to the award last season by Herrera ,has been under serious speculation of leaving the club. Jose Morinho on the other hand wouldn’t want to lose his first choice goalkeeper, not even now that the club is in the champions league.
Jose Mourinho is a manager who has always picked his first choice goalkeeper for both league and champions league games. Will he do it differently this time by picking one for premier league and the other for Champions league?? Can Mourinho afford to drop De Gea for champions league night football in order to give Romero some game time?? And here even comes the bigger question; can Mourinho keep both De Gea and Romero happily at United while he tries to integrate them with amazing upcoming Joel Periera??
I believe with these unanswered questions from my analysis, Mourinho is going to have a very difficult time in picking his first choice goalkeeper come next football season. @steemsports may have a different view.Do you have a different opinion? Nice write up, I must say this has crossed my mind recently also. How does mourinho keeps both de gea and romero happy, am not so sure he'll want to bench his best goalkeeper for champions league matches. My best guess is that he'll probably go with romero for cup games[Fa and carling cup] and maybe league games preceeding champions league match where he needs to rest his first team players
