Being a nurse who live in poverty

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

I'm a nurse, I work as many hours as my work gives me... I've applied to over 200 jobs in the last 6 months alone... and I am completely broke.

The company I work for pays below minimum wage, my wage barely pays my bills and leaves little to survive on afterward... next week I have been rostered 12 hours... for an entire week. I won't even be able to pay off my bills.

I've been begging for food on random Facebook groups and have had little success.... I've sold off almost all of my possessions. I live on a friends couch. I have nothing but my car and dog to my name.

But I don't let my patients ever see that I am broke. Every day I am at work... 30 minutes early, showered and smelling like roses with a huge smile on my face... because these people come to you in times of need for help... both physically and mentally... and I love seeing my patients leave happy and content with the care I provided. I listen to their stories and whinges. I hold them while the cry and even when they scream. I scrape off nasty things and fix hurting things. I protect against disease, and help to identify it.
I am there to be their angel in a time of darkness, and I love being that angel.

I just wish there were someone looking after me.

@gwennybabe You are doing a wonderful job on being a nurse. Tough times does not last, tough people do. And you are.

It's been going on for almost 2 years now! But thank you for your confidence x

Being a nurse is tough. When we zoom by for 5 minutes on rounds, the nurses are the ones spending hours with the patient and telling us what they really need.

But the turnover I personally see in our unit is huge - its a hugely stressful job, and financial reimbursement and work/life balance are often poor.

Followed for the healthcare team solidarity.

This doc is behind you.
