Throughout the beginning of time, there have been multiple types of mindsets. Rather you were the Hunter, the Caregiver, the Chef or the Friend, you had a role to play. But above all else there are the explorers, here to showcase a new light to everybody else who doesn't have the necessary time to explore themselves. That is where people like myself come in.
I am a 23 Experimental Screenwriter from Denver Colorado. What does that mean (some hypothetical voice might ask)? Well, the short answer basically boils down to I'm a Screenwriter who focuses on creating Blueprints for Visual Experiences rather than Story. Now, now, now... that doesn't mean I don't respect the idea of Storytelling. But here is why we desperately need a different vision inside the film market.
Hollywood (which in this Blog Post means the Industry, not the City) is built on Relationships, not on Craft or Talent. Because of this, the most Visionary People tend to focus on other Art-Forms (or just quit while they are ahead). And for those who brave enough to become Cinematic Explorers, the challenges that lie forward are too exorbitant to explain in a single paragraph (this topic deserves it's own Article).
That is why I am starting from the basics, reinventing & polishing the broken wheel known as the Modern Screenwriting Landscape. For those who are unaware, the Average Screenwriting Mindset is based on working around The Three Act Structure & displaying Stories that are familiar yet (somehow) unique.
Scripts are the Blueprint to every single movie ever made, therefore they have the most impact as to how a film will be shot & finalized. Because of this, Scripts should be the most Freeform & Exploratory part of the Pre-Production Process. In fact I'll give you an example from another Art Form to showcase how Screenwriting should work. Shigeru Miyamoto is the Creator of The Super Mario Franchise & has been called Nintendo's Golden Child. As his team thinks of an idea for a game, they come up with the concept first. From here they add ideas as they are in the midst of creating the product. This style of Creative Design is why Nintendo (in my opinion) creates some of the most complete creative experiences in the Popular Arts.
Unfortunately, most Screenplays don't follow this method.
The Industry expects you to Copy & Paste the templates from other Films that are deemed "Successful". This doesn't just come down to The Three-Act Structure either. The Industry expects you to Copy Character Traits, Backstories, Themes, Ideals, Settings, and Arcs that have been used beforehand. This is why most Hollywood Films feel the same, it is by sheer design. And unless you get an Open-Minded Screenwriter, all of these films will continue to copy one another.
So what happens when you try to point out these obvious problems? Backlash from fellow writers who feel like they deserve praise for Conforming to the pact. If I'm not the most hated Screenwriter in the World already, I will be soon. An Industry doesn't like to see change if the end goal creates discomfort. Yet in a Space for Showcasing Creative Visions, comfort should never be a goal in the first place. The Best Artists in History sold their passion through tough work & determination. And this Tough Work wasn't just about pumping out whatever was trending in the moment. It was about contemplating creative ideals & showing off what could be done when we step away from our Societal Bubbles.
If you don't agree with me, I hope your Conformity gives you peace. But for the rest of you who want to see a change in the way the world is structured, I'm one of the people to follow. Make sure to remember the #experimentalscreenwriter tag on Steemit & follow my Articles as they come along. Thanks and I wish you all a Visionary Day.
