hi Marcus!!! Welcome ! Thankyou for sharing with us. Minds are crazy powerful, I appreciate your focus on social constructs. I find myself thinking about the power of symbols often...and words.
Modest Mouse says
Language is the liquid we're all dissolved in
It seems so true to me, that our language is what defines our reality. I love your Pimp look man, it's smoooooth!!!
There's this podcast I've been listening to now for a while...It's called 'The History of English', and it's like 100+ hour episodes at this point starting with Proto-Indo-European Language and goes into present day. I'm so fucking addicted to it...it's like 60% history, and 40% word etymologies. But it's wild how much language does change over the years, and also how some parts seem to stay the same for so long.
For instance, now I look up etymologies(word histories) all the time...I looked up 'Freedom' the other day after seeing someone up here in Montana with a "Freedom isn't Free" bumper sticker.
Turns out that Freedom probably descended ultimately from proto-indo-european's Pri-ya meaning "dear, or beloved". And that later on in early Germanic groups it began to be used in contrast to someone who was captured against their will, or who was displaced into a community where nobody 'loved' them.
And eventually took on the meaning we tend to ascribe to it today, as being 'free'.
Anyhow...I hope you're enjoying yourself here...I loved reading your intro. Looking forward to more, and who knows, maybe we get to kick it in real time one of these days!
