Criticism of TLJ’s Luke Skywalker is Flawed (Spoilers)

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago  (edited)

I really want to encourage debate on this topic to see what you all think! The following is purely my opinion.

The Luke Skywalker portrayed in The Last Jedi
has been subjected to much criticism: he’s too miserable, he’s uncharacteristically sceptical and he does not represent the Luke that Star Wars fans grew up with.

Such criticism is flawed.

Before analysing this contentious criticism, one should consider the development of Yoda’s character. In short, Yoda was a serious Jedi Master in the prequels, whereas he was portrayed as a senile (at times comedic) character in the original trilogy. Parallels can be drawn between him and Luke.

Luke has witnessed the death of his father, the destruction of his Jedi Academy and now the death of his close friend Han Solo. He has become disillusioned with the Force; can you blame him? The film’a director has actually turned him into a three-dimensional character - a stark contrast from the goody two-shoes that he was in the OT. This makes Luke more realistic

I'm not particularly displeased about Luke's depression. I just wish he spent more time training Rey. He left the trilogy too early. He and Han Solo didn't do nearly enough in my opinion.

I agree, there wasn’t enough screen time of the island training sequence. I felt that aspect of the film was too rushed. They could have cut out the entire casino sequence and focussed more on Rey’s characterisation.

Agreed. I don't mind that they had to go, but they just needed to be there, you know? Original fans haven't seen them for nearly 40 years and they had to leave us just when we got them back again. Carrie Fisher's untimely passing doesn't help the situation at all. Who's going to be left for episode 9 now? The original cast could have done their mumbo jumbo in that one, not in 8.I don't even know what to expect now that all the classic actors are gone.

Yeah, the director of Ep 9 certainly has a huge job on his hands....

Welcome to Steemit. I loved the movie and I didn't see a problem with the way Luke was portrayed. He was worn down with everything and had lost his mojo. The film was unpredictable. I've only seen it once and I can't wait to see it a second time.

Thank you! Yes I also enjoyed it - I do think it had some flaws but overall it was enjoyable.

Don't know much about Star Wars, but welcome to Steemit!
