Steemit and Quiting the Rat Race

I've been Steeming since 2 months and it's about time I tell you a little bit more about me :

  • My name is Jean-Francois, but you can call me Jeff for short!
  • I am French Canadian
  • I work as a pharmacist
  • Interests : traveling, music (I sing and play guitar), nature, self-improvement techniques and sports

My Story

I used to be like everyone around me : working 9 to 5, doing what the system asked me to do, never questioning or setting goals in my life.

I experienced a lot of anxiety in those days : I didn't know its origins then, but felt hollow and unfulfilled.

In 2012, I started growing interest in finances, after my father showed me an ''emergency'' plan for ''hardships'', which consisted of a few gold bars he had bought in the '90s.

I became aware of cryptocurrencies around 2013, via Brother John F's ''Bitcoin Channel''.

In 2015, I decided to quit the city life and bought my grandparents' 1959 cabin in the wilderness and restored it since.

Influences/wakeup calls

  • Zeitgeist Videos
  • Alone in the Wilderness Series - Life of Dick Proenneke Videos
  • Greg Mannarino YouTube ( @marketreport )
  • Mike Maloney YouTube
  • Brother John F and the Bitcoin Channel YouTube
  • Anyone quitting the system and living his own dream

My Vision and Plans

I have the extreme luxury with my job to try to quit the rat race... part time!
Most people just can't, they have to be all-in.

Here's what's to come next :

  • Working part-time starting this winter
  • Starting a YouTube channel this fall focusing on meditation, relaxation, sleep improvement and self-development videos.
  • Steemit : I will soon blog on these topics using my own experiences and pharmacy background
  • Traveling the world in search for the best content to fuel my channels.

What attracts me to Steemit

Aside from the obvious : I am quite impressed by the quality of the community here : It's all about helping and being positive. A huge contrast from mainstream social medias that often become pissing contests.

Love this so much! Thank you for this. We are currently doing small scale homesteading on our little 1/3 acres in town (at least we live in a small, remote town) but have dreams of getting my husband out of his stressful job and into something he enjoys, preferably being able to work from home doing what he loves: handcrafted wood and metal projects. We also have hopes of buying more land outside of town and expanding our homestead and building an off grid cabin (we are mostly off grid now with a nice solar set up and water catchment). All that is to say, reading posts like this is so very encouraging to me and I hope and pray we can continue on this path and that between our youtube channel, steemit, and selling our handmade goods, we can make it work.

Thanks to both of you for reducing your footprint. So many ways to live and you are demonstrating that nobody has to settle.

All I can tell you is as long a you have a vision and you keep focusing on it, it's going to happen. It's all about being more independent from the governments and focusing on your own self. It's never been easier nowadays to startup a business and developing passive income online. Take advantage of that! Best of luck! Thanks for the great comment!

Welcome @Jeffcomeau its good to see more Steemians around. Have fun in this community. I wish you many followers and new friends :-) Cheers @chrisx

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hi @jeffcomeau ! This was a great introduction post, and I am happy to have come across you thanks to it.

I look very much forward to see what you can share on these topics. Working both in the space sector and with entrepreneurial projects on the side, I recently had a complete burnout. I had to let go of a number of things and found meditation as almost a life-saver. The ability to let go, and be able to just observe stress and other emotions run through the mind without letting it affect me more than necessary has truly helped me get back on track and with higher productivity levels than before. Hope you can help others achieve the same!

So I will enjoy reading your post and hope we can both benefit from connecting here on steemit.

Thanks for your tips on the way you meditate, I will apply them! You have the #1 solution with meditation! It is so underestimated and frowned upon socially. I find difficult to talk about it with people around me : they have this conceptualized image of a monk praying, in solitude and asceticism which is far from being the unique way of meditating!

Hahaha, yes and with a lot of new-age spiritual mumbo-jumbo being preached at every yoga-club, there is a bit of a credibility gap to be closed :P

People around me tend to get interested in it when they ask me how I manage to stay calm even when projects we work on get really intense. Or how I stay calm also in heated debates related to work etc. :) I think one has to demonstrate its value, and not just talk about it.

Quite an inspiring story. right from university days, I knew the "RAT RACE" wasn't my thing, so I ventured into photography which happened to be what I am passionate about in my 3rd year. I still had to see my B.Eng Elect/Elect to the end though. Welcome to Steemit @jeffcomeau I have followed you and upvoted, kindly follow back @mykelbankz. Hope you have fun on here.... thumbs.

I can tell you a lot about university : I spent 9 years of my life in 3 different universities. Went up to the doctorate level in cancer research. Most importantly, looking back at it : it was a shelter for me. Deep down, I didn't want to hit the real working life, I was afraid of it. Judging from what I've experienced working for almost 10 years now as a pharmacist I think my fears were somewhat sound. Not because of the nature of my job, but because of its context.

Welcome jeffcomeau to Steemit.

Thank you!

Hi, where do you plan to go to travel?

Good question, I will most definitely go back to Asia, especially Cambodia and Thailand, since I have contacts over there. Would also luv to visit Machu Picchu in Perou. Western Canada (BC) is also on my list, for the beauty of its landscape. But the sky is the limit, my friend!

Machu Picchu is awesome

I like the idea of taking the risk of leaving the rat race and starting to work on yourself. Too many people follow systems and steps to the point where they are no longer working for themselves. I am looking to take the leap in the near future and do a job I enjoy and take interest in, rather than a 9-5 just getting by. Thank you for the post!

Glad to hear that! Keep us posted on your quest.

New member here and enjoyed reading your post.

We have some chemistry you and I : I'm a major in Biochemistry. Followed you back.

welcome aboard@jeffcomeau , your idea of starting a youtube channel sounds interesting.

My Steemit will have a direct feed to it. Stay tuned!

Welcome Jeff. Being French, I'll guess that you're in Quebec. I have some French background too. The cabin sounds cozy. My grandparents had one near the Appalachian mountains in Pennsylvania.

Thank you! Indeed a lots of French Canadians were either deported during the war of the 1750's in Québec or simply tried their luck in the 1800's for better jobs in the US. Glad you remember your background.

Great intro @jeffcomeau!

Thanks for being along with me since the beginning.

Hello there two months in and I'm just finding a new about me post :) nice to meet a fellow Canadian I'll check out your yt channel thanks for sharing and enjoy your time away from the rat race.

Many thanks! Canada is indeed a great country to be part of, whether French or English speaking, we're all part of a distinct community.

Beautiful pictures of I'm assuming where you live now. Looking at those makes me cold and dreading winter coming again. That stream looks like it would have some tasty fish. Can't wait to here about what you find out about improving sleep because my fiance struggles falling asleep a few times a week.

Those problems are way more common than you'd think : ''best selling'' meds in pharmacy are mostly comprised of anti-depressants, anti-anxiety/sleeping aids and ADHD pills, which is my opinion a direct consequence of the ever-ending performance asking society. You'd think it be easier for us to live every day, thanks to the technological improvements, but the correlation is starting to fade. For me, that's a sign the human capacities are approaching their limits and this will ultimately be the reason why the economy will collapse.

Thanks - I LOVE reading these "free your life" posts. I was never able to handle the 9-5, I was the most deeply miserable person....because I was not free. Good luck to everyone who's managed to escape and survive! And kudos to your father for getting that gold in......one of our elderly friends had a $30K stash of gold bars built into his new kitchen cabinets lol

What an interesting story! I note that most of us Steemians once felt depressed and unfulfilled at some point of our lives, often without being able to pinpoint the source of the problem. We have the remember that we're the first generation to come up to our senses and realize something is wrong with our society. The American Dream lifestyle of the Baby-Boomers generation doesn't work anymore. That's why it's difficult : you often have no model to guide you, since we're all part of a novel social experiment.

Welcome to Steemit Jean-Francois! May Steemit let you unplug while staying in touch with the world!

You're from NZ! Beautiful country very similar to Canada in some ways.

Thanks! I have friends from BC and they say the same

Upvoted and RESTEEMED!

Great! Thanks for that!

Welcome to Steemit jeffcomeau.

Thanks I appreciate that!

Cool intro. I myself am in the process to construct a plan of some sort if I am able to. I am debating on homeschooling my future children while still earning a decent living. I dont have it figured out but we'll see.

It takes time and answers come little by little, but you're on the right track!

Welcome on Steemit @jeffcomeau! I'm glad @marketreport introduced you to Steemit! Good for both of you.

Steem on my friend!

And I'm glad you followed some of the recommendation I wrote about in my last post. It pays to read...

Many thanks to you : reading your introduceyourself post gave me the motivation to finally do it ! Glad to be on the TeamSteem!

I just re-read your comment you left on my post. I hadn't realized it was you. I'm taking in too much. Take care my friend and see you around!

What a life.

Following you.

Best,
Fefein

Looks like here all of us are trying to escape from the rat race.

Love the specials song, btw.

We're still a tiny fraction of the whole rat population, so there's hope!

Still a student and I know the rat race is not part of me. Congrats on quitting the rat race. Let's make more money in cryptocurrency.

I wish I had that knowledge at your age : you have a huge advantage over 99% of the population, my friend!

Welcome and Thank You for being with us!! Following your Blog now
