BREAKING: Wild Edge Creature Dips Toe into Steemy Pool

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

Steemit community! I'm really excited to be here to help bring the worlds of cryptocurrency and permaculture together. These movements are so aligned, it's just not widely recognized yet. People power is what makes both cryptocurrency and permaculture possible; recognizing the diversity of ideas, skill sets, and passions that everyone brings as strength.
The system we're currently in is doing its darndest to quash this vibrant, bursting energy of diversity in favor of a monopoly, a monocrop, ONE way to do things - be it the dollar or the GMO roundup-drenched cornfield.
Unsurprisingly, this current dominant narrative is crumbling, being that it's a weak and overwhelmingly boring design.
I'm into feeding this juicy new growth on the edges of our culture, where we now sit as cryptocurrency geeks and (future or current) permaculturists. Fertile, wild edges!

There are, though, reasons why I'm calling myself a wild edge creature. I originally read the phrase somewhere and it's stuck with me.

Reasons people have labeled me "wild"

Above: Cauliflower mushroom on the left, Shiitake on the right.

  • I track down & eat wild mushrooms regularly, and they are a major part of my diet.
  • Based on everything I've seen, traditional marriage is a terrible design.
  • Every drop of rainwater that hits a manmade surface is LIKE GETTING FREE PIZZA DELIVERED BUT BETTER and we should treat it that way.
  • "Organic" food (a.k.a. "we didn't spray certain shit on your shit") is the barest bones of standards and really a lame bar to set for ourselves; waaay beyond organic is how I grow, how I design systems & how I teach others to grow.

  • I believe in fully cycling nutrients, which includes composting dead animals (gasp!) and human waste (so many gasps!).
  • I grow 80% of my own vegetables and am pushing that number upwards!
  • Swimming happens only in natural bodies of water, no chemical pits for this girl.
  • There are actually no excuses to use any synthetic chemicals on the earth, ever, full stop.
  • FYI, it's possible to cause dry rivers, streams, and springs to run again using living systems. Also for dry lakes, wells, and ponds to fill.
  • I believe it's possible to completely reforest the desert and am stoked to contribute to these efforts, which are already happening!
  • Climate-appropriate diet is, in my understanding, a lot more important than "veganism" or any other particular diet subscription. (yeah, crucify me, whatever.)
  • I would rather do almost anything than be trapped indoors for extended periods of time.
  • I would NOT go to the moon even if it were 110% free (yes, meaning getting paid to go).

I'm An Edge Creature Because:

I have one foot in two worlds in a lot of ways.

  • I grew up in a conventional American household where I ate largely unhealthy food and learned all sorts of unhealthy dynamics through divorce, bullying and conventional schooling. I've moved radically away from that through my choices since then.
  • I have two dogs, and I buy dog food for them, which violates all sorts of everything... even though I buy the best kind I can afford and buy locally. I also give them flea & tick medication, & they get vaccinated as needed. (Chemical-tastic, totally aware, though I have at least found a holistic worming remedy.) But I am "on the edge" with them in the sense that it's a work in progress to design and transition into systems for working & living with dogs that ARE sustainable and nontoxic.

  • I'm relatively vain, which viewed from a practical standpoint is a waste of energy. I perform daily skin care, hair care, and workout rituals which, while modified to be eco-friendly, technically take away from time I could be using to do more regenerative activities. But, I just can't let them go.
  • I haven't transitioned to completely off-grid living (yet!)
  • Communication is not a strength of mine. Be it learned socially through my family, or genetic, or as a result of being pretty introverted, it's something I need to try extra hard at, and I don't always succeed. At the same time, I recognize communication is one of the most vital and powerful parts of both the cryptocurrency and permaculture movements. Communicating through Steemit is one powerful way to increase my online output and accountability and thereby keep working on this aspect of myself.
  • Because I'm trying to bridge the drip-feed, surface-level, buzzfeed-bubblegum-bullshit internet/overall culture with this deeper, regenerative, restorative type of knowledge I happened to have been lucky enough to receive. I feel like nothing I've learned is my knowledge, I'm just a vessel, and I need to try to communicate things in a way people can digest.

So, what do you think, Steemit community? Should we be weird edge creatures together?

P.S. please don't be offended if I don't respond to comments right away, there isn't internet access at my house right now but I'm really looking forward to talking to everyone!

Hello Wild Home Grown Jen, love your photos, what you do, your great smile, and I have gardens, I eat raw garlic each day, love animals. Thanks for sharing, hehe. You are awesome. I'm Oatmeal Joey Arnold. You can call me Joey.

Garlic is amazing! I make garlic-lemon-honey tea when I'm sick (cayenne is supposed to be an ingredient in that recipe but my taste buds are too wimpy to add it, haha)

Welcome to Steemit! There are a lot of similar minded people here and we have a big homesteader community so I'm sure you'll fit right in!
