Hello World, I'm Johnyliltoe

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

When I first joined SteemIt I didn't think much of it. I've dabbled in Reddit and had twitter and facebook accounts for forever, but I've never been much into social media.

I don't particularly expect that to change.

Steem is something special though. Maybe it's the rewards, maybe it's the community, but I actually feel compelled to be involved.

And so, after a few days of this and that, I think some introductions are in order.

My name is Chris. By trade I guess I'm a software tester, but I've got a colorful career with varying skills that don't always match up. So I'm not always sure what to call myself. I work in software development, that much is certain.

For about 3 years now (my hair is now nearly twice the length in the above video) I've been casually running a primarily gaming-related YouTube channel. Limited success, but it's more of an occasional hobby anyway. The people you meet when you put yourself out there are probably the best aspect of it. Guess to some extent I'm hoping for the same here.

I also enjoy writing stories and poetry, though I've found it difficult to focus on one project long enough to actually get past a first chapter. Not much of an outdoorsy type, though I do enjoy the occasional hike through the mountains. I live in B.C. Canada so I don't have to go far to find a trail.

My goal here is pretty simple. Have a positive experience. Money is great, but I've been down this road before. You focus on money that that's all that starts to matter. It's draining. It's oppressive. You focus your energy on money and it simply loses it's value. What good is wealth if you're not happy? In this microbiome that mixes business with pleasure I'm taking the stance that this time it's all about the fun.

I like variety, so you might see me just about anywhere, but I do have a lean towards the politics and puzzle channels. I keep up with contests too. I'm a little bit competitive, and like I said, Money's great if you don't let it take control.

That's me in a nutshell. I look forward to meeting some fantastic people and bitter rivals. Ask me anything if you wish, I'm not a private person by a long shot.

Hey little John, I mean...ah well. Welcome to Steemit. ;)

When I arrived on Steemit a few weeks ago I was very confused how this all works. I read through hundreds of articles about the dynamics of Steemit and finally wrote this The Ultimate Guide for Steemit Beginners: Money, Posts, Design, Topics, Bots, Behaviour, Community and Apps. I wrote it for YOU. Normally I wouldn't post my links into others comments unasked. But the massive positive feedback from my readers made it my mission to help newcomers finding this post quickly. Feel free to ask any questions. I will try to answer them all. I apologize if you are not interested in this and I will not further disturb you.

@flauwy

I'm... not sure I ever realized that inverting my handle made a reference to a popular fictional character. I've been using it for a decade now... maybe I'm forgetting, but if not just... wow.

Thanks for the reply! I agree, posting your own content in someone else's comments should be generally frowned upon, but I feel there are exceptions. Posting a useful guide in someone's introduction? Totally cool. Posting your own article on how to deal with insomnia when someone is complaining about insomnia? Also cool, and efficient.

I appreciate your good work, and will definately check our your post. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, I am both glad you like my post as well as that I could enrich your view on your own nickname. LOL

I see you around. Enjoy Steemit!

Welcome @johnyliltoe! I now have a face with the person that is solving all the Dice Challenges I post ;-)

Indeed you do! Dice challenges that everyone who reads through this comments section should totally check out because they're criminally underrated so far.

I'm jealous, I wish I lived in BC. Alberta is so dry and boring! Welcome to Steemit!

Alberta isn't so bad. Better than Saskatchewan or, god forbid, Manitoba. I moved to and from Toronto in 2012/2014 driving the entire way. BC is always a nice drive, Alberta isn't too bad, even on the east side. Saskatchewan can get kind of boring, but still some beautiful fields of flowers.

Then I hit the Manitoba border. Immediately everything seemed more gray and drab. I know some wonderful people from there, and lived there a year in my childhood, but god do I want to limit my time there. Would like to see the Forks again though...

Yeah, some places in Alberta can be amazing. I'm in Calgary, moved here from Hamilton, Ontario about 11 years ago and I have to say that Calgary is 100 times better than Hamilton.

I've always loved BC though, I have not been to many places there but the ones I have seen were beautiful. I can't wait to go back. I've never been to Manitoba but its definetely not on my list of places i want to visit. Saskatchewan I've been to once, I'm in no hurry to go back haha.

Yeah... Calgary IS 100 times better than Hamilton :P I still prefer Edmonton, but can't really deny the Stampede is awesome. I enjoyed Toronto, and even my little piece of Scarborough was nice. Trying to move to Victoria next (live in Kelowna right now)

I've only gone to Edmonton a few times, It's not bad. I enjoyed it. I miss Toronto! That was always my favorite place to go, especially Canada's Wonderland because I'm a ride junkie. Can't get enough of them.

I'm hoping to get out to Victoria this summer, I've never been but I've heard great things. Kelowna is nice, Ive been there a couple times

Victoria is like a more vibrant, chill Kelowna. Both beautiful cities, but there's more life in Victoria. Just had an interview today, so fingers crossed, but I'll get there one day.

Never ended up going to any of the cool parks while I was in Toronto. Was usually concerned with just finding out how to keep the bills pays. I did go to see Spamalot though. Hilarious play, if you're at all a fan of Monty Python.

That sounds awesome, I'll definetely have to try to get a way for a weekend there this summer.

Hmm, I've never checked it out but I've heard of the play. Oh, I think everyone is a fan of Monty Python, some just don't want to admit it. Haha.

Ya know, I think you're right. No one can resist the spanish inquisition!

Welcome Chris! There are a lot of great people here and amazing opportunities. As cliche as this may sound this place is and will only be what you make of it. Hopefully your story can inspire others as much as others wish to do the same for you. All of the best.

Thank you :) It's cliche for sure, but it doesn't make it any less right. That's really how all communities work isn't it? Contribute, consume, profit!

Normally mean profit in the emotional sense... takes on a slightly different meaning here :P

"You focus on money and that's all that starts to matter." Couldn't agree more, Chris. I remember reading a book called "The Number". The author would ask people at different stages of their lives how much money they would need in order to be willing to stop working for it. What's interesting is that no one ever has that number in mind--they just feel where they are now is just not enough--It didn't matter if they were millionaires many times over--they still felt compelled to earn more... Ugh... I don't understand this mentality. Anyway, enjoyed your intro and welcome to the community. You seem to be the kind of person I'd enjoy following, so here's a follow :) Cheers and best in this new journey!

Thanks! Yeah, around the end of 2012 I was making good (not great) money. Had about 30k saved up, owned my own apartment (with a mortgage) and was living it up. But I wasn't happy with it. I liked the people I worked with, but I was ultimately working to make more money. It was empty.

How much money would I need to stop working for it? 2 million. I can live off that interest easily. I'd still work though, and probably wouldn't change my life style all too much. If money would make that much of an impact (outside of paying off my debt, THAT I don't like one bit) then I should be taking steps to change it without money.
