It's a weird feeling leaving a job and people you care about.
And although you wanted to make sure your name isn't drawn through the mud later it probably didn't help as this 'Boss' probably just needs a scapegoat sometime later to cover his shortfalling. And didn't respect you as a person wanting to complete your tasks, for your own piece of mind.

That boss is exactly the type that you are talking about. The sense of calmness that I have in my life now knowing that I will NEVER have to work for him again...it's amazing. I do hope that someday the favorite will find his way out as well. If he ever does, I would work for him again in a heartbeat.
