How did I find Steemit? I need to thank Greg Mannarino (steemit.com/@marketreport) for mentioning about Steemit in his YouTube video a few weeks ago.
Something I love to do in my spare time is to watch the stock market. I am hoping I can share and exchange some investment ideas with you.
Currently, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 1.25%. As usually, financial reporters are treating this decline as a major decline. Here is a headline from MarketWatch: Trump fears sink stocks worldwide as safe haven assets rally
I don't know, but everyone seems to agree with the idea that today's market loss is all Trump's fault. Is that really true? Anyway, I'm not interested in talking about politics, so let me get back to the market.
Dow Average is down 1.25%. Do you care? Does it give you really bad headache? If you lose 1.25% of your investment money, does it cause you to sell every single stock in your account? Of course, the answer is "no". Suppose your account has $10,000 worth of stocks. 1.25% loss is $125. If your account size is $1 million, you are down $12,500. I know $12,500 is a lot of money, but for wealthy investors this will not make them panic and sell every stock they own.
What will make you sell stocks in your account?
Some time ago, I read an article on Business Insider, and let me quote:
Naturally, when markets go up or down, people look for cause and effect. We went up because of X, or we went down because of Y. The market “liked” this or it did not “like” that. But in many cases (and I would argue, in most cases), PRICE is the cause. More transactions occur because the price changed than because the news changed.
I agree in essence. People decide to buy and sell stocks 'because the price changed'. I do not disagree that the news can be deciding factors to buy or sell stocks. News can be good or bad. But, if there are no price changes, we will not be motivated to make transactions. If your stock is going down like crazy, you will sell it. You will probably say: "I don't know what is causing this major decline, but let me sell it now !"
Analysts, gurus and reporters tell you why a certain stock is going down. Their opinions may be sometimes valuable, and their opinions may cause you to sell your stock. But, I still believe changing price is the main reason people decide to make stock transactions.
