    "Image Upload: Unable to contact server" or something similar. It vanishes quickly. It also happens when I try to upload a profile picture.

      Try uploading your images to imgur or a similar photo hosting site. Then you just paste the link into the box. It's much easier than trying to upload a photo directly into steemit.
