I accidentally created the most popular and longest-running tipping bot on reddit. Hi Steemit! I'm mohland, creator of dogetipbot. AMA? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hey everybody! You might know me as /u/mohland on reddit. Now I'm @mohland here as well. ;)

@ummjackson posted a nice intro post about the history of Dogecoin here, so I figured I'd talk about "How Dogetipbot Turned a Spoof Altcoin into a Tipping Phenomenon" ;)

Back in December 2013, I thought Dogecoin was a hilarious Altcoin, so I mined a million of them, told a few of my friends, and sent them a bunch for fun. Since we were all having a good laugh about this, I decided to check out the newly-created /r/dogecoin subreddit. Back in those days, there were literally dozens of us!

Some folks were asking for a Dogecoin tipbot, so I cloned vindimy/altcointip and got it up and running. dogecointip and dogetip were taken as reddit usernames, so I registered the name that stuck: dogetipbot.

The first few hours were a bit uneventful -- a few of us tipped, tried it out, and got really excited when it worked. We probably registered 10-15 users. By then, I had already stayed up far too late, and I was tired of typing in CAPTCHAs to manually approve post verification tips, so I posted this infamous thread linking to this image:

By the time I woke up in the morning, my post had hit the front page of reddit... because it's the internet, and that's what happens:

  • 24 hours in we had 500 users
  • 48 hours in we had 1,500 users
  • 3 weeks in we had 15,000 users
  • 3 months in we had 50,000 users

So yeah. It all grew pretty fast. :)

Ah, and to this day, we're looking at over 700 million Dogecoins tipped through dogetipbot ($280k USD+ at the value of the tip) and 65k+ users. Volume has definitely slowed down since the original hype train, but it's been a fun ride. I still keep the bot running on reddit :)

Steemit seems interesting to me -- I'm a little wary there might be a lot of "begging" (asking for tips) content posted here, so that's always a challenge. Maybe set up a begging category? ;) Haha.

AMA, especially if it has to do with insights into dogecoin/dogetipbot culture or keeping something like this running for so long.

Cheers!
