Hey everybody! You might know me as /u/mohland on reddit. Now I'm @mohland here as well. ;)
@ummjackson posted a nice intro post about the history of Dogecoin here, so I figured I'd talk about "How Dogetipbot Turned a Spoof Altcoin into a Tipping Phenomenon" ;)
Back in December 2013, I thought Dogecoin was a hilarious Altcoin, so I mined a million of them, told a few of my friends, and sent them a bunch for fun. Since we were all having a good laugh about this, I decided to check out the newly-created /r/dogecoin subreddit. Back in those days, there were literally dozens of us!
Some folks were asking for a Dogecoin tipbot, so I cloned vindimy/altcointip and got it up and running. dogecointip and dogetip were taken as reddit usernames, so I registered the name that stuck: dogetipbot.
The first few hours were a bit uneventful -- a few of us tipped, tried it out, and got really excited when it worked. We probably registered 10-15 users. By then, I had already stayed up far too late, and I was tired of typing in CAPTCHAs to manually approve post verification tips, so I posted this infamous thread linking to this image:
By the time I woke up in the morning, my post had hit the front page of reddit... because it's the internet, and that's what happens:
- 24 hours in we had 500 users
- 48 hours in we had 1,500 users
- 3 weeks in we had 15,000 users
- 3 months in we had 50,000 users
So yeah. It all grew pretty fast. :)
Ah, and to this day, we're looking at over 700 million Dogecoins tipped through dogetipbot ($280k USD+ at the value of the tip) and 65k+ users. Volume has definitely slowed down since the original hype train, but it's been a fun ride. I still keep the bot running on reddit :)
Steemit seems interesting to me -- I'm a little wary there might be a lot of "begging" (asking for tips) content posted here, so that's always a challenge. Maybe set up a begging category? ;) Haha.
AMA, especially if it has to do with insights into dogecoin/dogetipbot culture or keeping something like this running for so long.
Cheers!
Verification, because nobody ever lies on the Internets. :)

Small world! Back when they were still Snapier? ;) I'll tell 'em you say hi!
The whole team is pretty awesome -- we just got back from our summer retreat in Whistler, BC.

Cool, welcome. Gotta ask, do you have a master bot plan for steemit too?

Not particularly. It's still early beta here -- really depends on what endpoints are available on the API. Every service we launched on was a bit of a hack / workaround. Good APIs == Happy Developers. :)

For sure. It looks like a lot of this is a wrapper around the steemd daemon. Fun stuff to play with -- a lot of the dogetipbot code is probably compatible. :)

It's been a long time coming, but hoping to have the full-fledged dogetipbot (what's running right now) codebase open sourced and on github soon. Was working on that last night. :)

I actually haven't actually seen anybody beg. Your account would probably be destroyed by the amount of downvotes. The only "begging" you can do is spread your already popular content for a little more $$

That's actually good to hear. As Steemit grows it'll be interesting to see how this dynamic plays out. /r/dogecoin had a bit of an unspoken "You like a post/comment, tip it" rule going on there once things really got going. :)

I've noticed a few "please upvote" posts over the few weeks I've been on here. Thankfully there not too prevalent...yet.
