Filmmakers Delight

Hi Steemians, my name is Portia, I'm a filmmaker and hyped to be here on Steemit :)

I'm based in London and have worked in film for almost 10 years now.

4 years ago I started work on my first feature length film. It’s called Killing Kora, it’s about a contract killer who moonlights as a music teacher. It’s got speech bubbles like a comic book and a big score. It looks like this

The trailer is up on Dtube

along with a video intro I made, explaining how I got to be here.

And if you want to see it, the whole film will be up on Dtube later in the week when I get a chance to upload it!

So, the film industry is going through a total overhaul, and not a moment too soon. Obviously this began with digital cameras and editing software which started off the ‘democratization’ of filmmaking. But despite the cost of production coming down, distribution has remained as complex and in a lot of ways as expensive as ever.

Of course, we’ve been able to use the internet to showcase our work for years now, and there are a lot of platforms dedicated to film - some better than others. But none have the kind of atmosphere that I’ve found here on steemit and dtube.

The potential is really staggering for someone like me. Our film was made entirely independently. (There’s a vlog coming up next week about where the finances came from)

I only discovered Dtube a couple of weeks ago. Before this I had decided to make the film available for free because I would prefer to develop an audience than try to generate profit. Given that this is my first feature, that we have no festival status and there are no famous faces in our film, we would struggle to generate significant profit online.

But at this stage, profit, although it would be very helpful, isn't my priority. What is even more valuable is access to and feedback from an audience.

In my opinion what all filmmakers are looking for when we try to get in to festivals is partly recognition but also because of the audience which follows.

So what is thrilling about this place is that there is a potential audience and that it is full of people who feel empowered and feel part of something. For far too long I think movie studios have produced films which audiences feel are a waste of their time (and money) but also feel powerless to do anything about, other than not watch. So the implications that you can vote with not just your time but with your Steem power are just huge.

This place really feels like a gift, I’m delighted to be here and look forward to sharing our work with you, big thanks to all of you that have build this place up to be what it already is. Happy New Year :)

I'm looking forward to your movie being posted on DTube. I agree with you that both Steemit and DTube have great potential for filmmakers and the business model could be a game changer for independent filmmakers.

Film should be up by the end of the week, gonna check out some of your reviews later!

I totally agree! I'm in the same shoes as an independent filmmaker puzzling over how to handle distribution and actually make money or at least come out even instead of losing it.

One thing I find annoying about DTube though, is that it doesn't merge nicely with Steemit. Like if you want to share a DTube video on Steemit it just looks like a link and doesn't display like when you share from YouTube.
