Introduction to English-speaking community ! Starting my agro-ecological garden.

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hey, here is my introduction to the community Steemit :)

Who am I ?

My name is Quelquun, in french, it means "someone". Surely you know the illyade and the odyssey? That's where my nickname comes from. On Cyclops Island, when Ulysses gives his name to the Cyclops, he introduces himself under the pseudonym ""Nobody", so, later, when the Cyclops tells his brothers that Ulysses punctured his eye, this one tell them "Nobody pierced his eye." This story really marked me when I was a kid, that's why the pseudonym "quelquun" Like this, if you are asked who did a bullshit .. It's someone .. :)

I am passionate about human productions (theater, cinema, painting, music ...), garden, and generally curious about a little all disciplines. (I have already tried to build a wind turbine without knowing anything about electricity.) I am relatively good self-taught. I am not afraid to start new learning alone.

In short, I am 27 years old. i maked an artistic curriculum.
After 5 years of school, I have chosen to stop this school without even trying to get my degree, and to reorient me to market gardening, without experience, without formation, without collaborator. I made this choice when I realized that selling my services, my skills, my knowledge to the industry, would not suit me.
I could have chosen to be a graphic designer, illustrator, scriptwriter, storyboarder, character designer, cartoonist, animator, game designer. architect..
I could have chosen to work in the record industry, book, music, video game, film, fashion.
I could also have been an author, or an artist. Put me in "Freelance" (which we say in France :)) or in any of these big words above, make my hole in the middle, in the "Game". Or be the guy who makes the graphics promo labels for all brands of wine and whiskey already not very expensive at the base, for example.
In fact, I realized, too late, but I realized that none of that suited me. I had lost myself. I was in the wrong place.
(Shit.)
By entering an artistic curriculum, I wanted to learn something concrete: an art craft. For me it was like becoming a blacksmith, a glassblower, or a stonemason. I was going to learn a something real. However I had not taken into account for what would then probably serve this knowledge, my expertise. My time. Me.

During these 5 years, I had the time to do other things, like to be passionate about the plants world. While I was bursting my way in drawing and painting, I started to look at all the documentaries that was talking, from near and far, the universe of plants, ornamental first, edible in a second time. It happened very regularly to just listen to the sound of the documentary while I was working on something else. Or listen to the radio too sometimes. (France culture is great!)

And that's what changed everything:
I started with bonsai,
I bought a few, but soon got tired.
Then I was fascinated by carnivorous plants,
I bought some, but it was not enough ...
But it remained very ornamental. Quickly my interest was on edible plants (fruits, vegetables, flowers, tubers, roots ..), and I started to grow. Just for fun, pleasure. A little at first, then more and more. I just fell in love with the plant world. Today, after 6 years of interest, I have more than 180 varieties of different seeds, a dozen fruit trees (I plan to reinvest .... :)), some cacti, bonzaïs and carnivorous plants. (I disbursed without counting ! :D)

After 5 years of school, I decided to send everything away, without even finishing my year, to reorient myself to my new job: Market gardener, or farmer, if you prefer. But beware, the real job of Peasant, as the old: Without mechanization. Just me, my plants, good knowledge, and some tools.

My project / What do I have for accomplishing it ?

I have space to grow these vegetables and plant some fruit trees, what to start. It is not huge, about 2500m ² in total (spread over two fields), but to begin its perfect.

I also currently have 3 greenhouses of different sizes:

  • The first of 18m ², bought 300 €.

  • His big sister, copy conforming but which measures 6m long more: 36m ², bought 300 € in promotion.

  • The last, built in bad DIY ;) (I Plan to improve it) for the experience with almost only the recovery (Except the tarp and 4 corner posts): about 16m ². I paid about 250 € in total.

As you can imagine, I already have some experience, but on smaller surfaces, and I had very different goals at the time. This year will be for me my first real year of culture / harvest on these 2500m ² in order to make a first concrete assessment. And I don't do that only for passion, or fascination, now i want to earn my life with it. I have been planning for a long time to create a blog, an FB page, or something like that in order to share my adventure, my past and future experience, as well as to promote my future farm. My recent discovery of steemit makes me rush this page creation. :)

Finally, to conclude, as you can imagine, this Steemit page will be mainly devoted to the progress of my project. I would post various tutorials (vegetable garden, recovery, DIY, construction ..), as well as articles mainly related to my experience in the market gardening world and my passion for the vegetal world. :)
Beside that, maybe traduce some of my articles to share my (for now) small experience in the world of crypto-currencies. (Only if i had a good returns of your opinion about my eng.)

I hope my english was not so bad to read.

Hope you will enjoy following my project and experiences. :)

See you soon !

Hi @qqelquun

Do not worry, your english is very readable.

What a wonderful project you have here! In what region of France do you live?

I am also a gardener (as a hobby), and with my best friend (she is also one), we rent a little land in a community garden to grow our own veggies. I will be keeping an eye on your progress. I understand it is your first year!

By the way, it is a shame you didn't finish your school, just a few more months woudl have been enough... it would have given you a sense of completion and boosted further your confidence.

I am saying this because what I read between the lines is that you give the impression of lacking confidence in your ability to finish things... Yet, do not worry too much, all creative people have that.

Your gardening project seems quite well under way, maybe it took you to explore many paths before finding your own (like it did for me! I only woke up in my forties...).

Good luck!

Thank you for this comment. :)
Yep i know, but i didn't regret. Things was what they were. :)

Now i draw, for fun, again. But with a nice formation. I'm not professional but it's ok. & I learned what i wanted to.

Now i'm learning my real job, for the better :)

Good luck with your plans too ! :)
