in introduceyourself •  7 years ago

Hello Steemit. My name is Jason and I'm an American living in Tokyo Japan. I've been here nine years and I think it's one of the most amazing cities in the world. I have many hobbies such has photography, cryptocurrencies, music, hi-fi, PC hardware, skiing, etc. I can go on for a while.

It seems everyone is very friendly here, so please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about Japan or Tokyo. I will do my best to answer your questions in a timely fashion. Also feel free to check out my photos. Thanks! :^)

Thanks! I'll check it out. This is the most freiendly SNS I've seen in years. What a breath of fresh air!

That's great! Everyone really is surprisingly friendly there... of course, no platform is perfect, but the general vibe is pretty good. What's an SNS? I haven't heard that term before.

Social Network Service.

Wow! You live in Japan for 9 years and enjoy it? Amazing! I always wanted to visit Japan xD But many people told me about how bad it is living in Japan since its super expensive and most people there unfriendly... Japan is what you make it, just like anywhere else. I think many people become disenfranchised with where they are from and discover Japan and then think it's going to be some kind of utopia. It's not. It's just like anywhere else. People will be a bit standoffish to you if you don't speak Japanese. Japanese fear awkward encounters and a language barrier ranks up there pretty high on thinks they fear. That said, Japan has become so much easier to travel around since my first visit in 2003. Smartphones for use with translation and Google Maps for any and all train info is amazing. Making friends in Tokyo can be a bit hard if you don't speak Japanese. If you come to live here I would recommend finding a hobby club, sports club, etc. and make friends through that. Just striking up conversation isn't very successful for making friends here. This is where I think many people go wrong. Check out /r/japanlife on Reddit. Lots of good info there.

Not planning to live in Japan anytime soon but I will consider the researching Japan even more so when I do go, I will show my parents that where I am going, I will be safe when I go to visit Japan.

You are living a dream I may do, so jealous hehe and I'm from Oregon, was in Hawaii and then Vietnam and that was cool. Thanks for sharing, hehe. I'm Oatmeal Joey Arnold. You can call me Joey.

Thanks! I was beside myself when I first decided to move here. Tokyo is an amazing place.

Awesome.

Nice to meet you too!

That use to be the case, but now (especially since the Olympics are coming up in 2020) in Tokyo and other large cities like Osaka and Nagoya all signs have roman characters as well as the kanji. They've done the same thing in subway and train stations. If you have a smartphone Google Maps is a must for here. It will give you all the train information with times and fares. The only place you won't find English is out in the countryside. Small towns if they aren't big tourist destinations won't have any English. I wouldn't worry though. Any place you would want to go (especially on your first visit here) will have English everywhere including most restaurants. If not, use the Google Translate and have it to the AR/realtime translation via the camera on menus and you can get an idea of what everything is. It works surprisingly well.

Great photos Jason! All your posts are excellent so far!
