Let's Make a Terrarium During Coronavirus Quarantine

Hi 😃!!

During this lockdown period, I thought to learn a bit about Terrarium. This article is about the basic facts behind the terrarium.

What is terrarium?

Well, it is basically a sealed or open glass container with soil and small plants. Of course, terrariums are used for decorations.

There are two types of terrariums, open terrariums, and closed terrariums.

Open Terrariums

Here we don't cover the plant from the external environment. Plants that prefer less humidity and soil moisture can use for open terrariums. We can use plants such as follows for open terrariums.

  • Crassula Ovata (Jade)
  • Echeveria
  • Sempervivum
  • Haworthia
  • Kalanchoe Tomentosa (Panda Plant)
  • Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana (Widow's-Thrill)

Closed Terrariums

Here we close our plant from outside environment using a lid or cover. So it acts as a kind of separate environment system. As this condition makes the environment much moisture, tropical plant varieties, such as mosses, orchids, ferns, and air plants, are generally kept within closed terrariums.

What Happens inside a Closed Terrarium?

Closed terrarium act as a separate world. It has a small water cycle inside the container. There is water in the soil. The sunlight coming through glass walls causes the water to evaporate. The evaporated water forms droplets on the sides and top of the container. Once the droplets get too big, they fall down back to the soil providing water for the plants to drink and process repeats again.

As same in the real-world, plants inside the terrarium generate Oxygen during photosynthesis and release Carbon Dioxide during respiration. So the plants and soil creatures inside the terrarium can live for long.
