Your MacBook Pro should be able to run Yosemite (OS X 10.10.x) and El CapitánOS X 10.11.x with minor limitations, and Mavericks (OS X 10.9.x) or oldr with no limitations. MacBooks have a very long OS support. Perhaps you have to stay with some older versions of your favorita apps but it should be OK.

Max uo the RAM and you'll get more juice out of the veteran laptop.
