Who am I? From a philosophical perspective, can I even know?

in introduceyourself •  7 years ago  (edited)

I earn my living as a technical translator and terminology manager. As such, I’m oddly oversensitive to all things regarding spelling and grammar. I am fluent in English and German, and I wouldn't starve to death if I had to speak Slovak, French, or Spanish. In my work, I am happily sidetracked to the technological side of tweaking document formats (e.g. XML), building terminology databases, writing PHP/MySQL scripts and Office macros to optimize my efforts and impress my colleagues (and maybe a future employer).

I wish I could earn my living brewing beer and running my own café/pub. In the daytime, I would focus on brewery operations in the back, while my wife serves up her homemade cakes, sandwiches, and so on in the guest area. In the evening, I would offer up my beer and ale alongside other local brews, as well as a small menu of homemade grub to keep my guests happy.

Sure, I have my dreams, but I’m also a realist, and in the end you have to prove whether or not you can accomplish something. Although I’m a sceptic, you can use argumentation to win me over to your side for life. I prefer brutal honesty over politeness, and I prefer logical debates over name-calling.

Logical debates? Politeness? You realize this is the internet, right?

I'm kidding, of course! That's very refreshing to read. The internet/world needs more people with your attitude. I've always felt that if there's one thing everyone should agree upon, it's civility. When we lose our civility, we lose our humanity.

Welcome to Steemit and best of luck to you! You've got a lot of great interests; so, I'm sure you'll produce a lot of great and interesting content!

I agree about civility. That‘s one of the thing that attracted me to Steemit: you build a reputation that is saved in the blockchain.

Welcome! We're very glad to have you.
I would be interested in reading more about your work specifically as it relates to document formats and macros. I'm in data management myself, and we greatly benefit from a wide variety of document formats, such as XML. My education background is not in anything technology related, but my job has forced me to learn a lot, and so, I enjoy learning more when I get the opportunity.
I'm a big fan of dystopian literature/movies as well. They are great lenses through which one can observe and debate about society.

Hi, thanks for your comments. I‘m looking forward to the experience on this platform. I have a few ideas in the works for writing about scripts that I have collected, written, and compiled. I just got done writing an off-the-cuff introduction of a story I‘ve been wanting to get out of my head. (Check my feed for it.) It‘s inspired by the book “Magicians of the Gods” by Graham Hancock. Really thought-provoking!
